I'm hoping 14 is a success. I really hope it becomes #1. Then maybe the DEV Team from 14 can come back and help Matsui with 11.
Then maybe they will decide to remake 7 as mentioned before.
Then maybe they will recode 11 down to the last expansion.
Ok maybe I went a little too far there...

Will XIV affect XI after launch ? Yes it will , even XIV Beta was drag ppl's out when it was Beta time . But also i think server merge could solve that problem , so servers will be populated .

FF11 will survive just look at EQ 1. Some people do not like changes in life and others just play for the old feelings or remember when there were a kid, college, wife, husband, kids, and friends, or Just that first party in the dunes. One thing square got going for them is there a private company. So as long as ff 11 getting the 1% profit it will be good . Unlike EA and some of the other companies that been just about there 10% ever year and now people not buying there games, and there like wtf. With all the top programmers going to kickstarters.
The biggest thing is if ff14 fails then square going bankrupt route and then ff14 and ff11, and the entire franchises is up for sell. They wasted a lot on games that just plain sucked over the last few years. Then tryed to blame there fans for not buying the games. They change a lot in the last year though. It finally like the square for gamers again with ff14.
If ff14 succeeds then all they need for ff11 is a 1% profit and they will keep it running, They be stupid not to , but we will see slower updates and a lot different people running it as there moving there top talent from ff11 to there other games.
I think if ff14 succeeds and before they shut down ff11 be like 6 month to year after ff14 launch and when successful they would , put in a free to play model on ff11 before they shutdown ff11. They got to be careful when they save ff11 though at that time since, if make free to play to fast then people on ff14 be like well when do we get that. Double edge sword.

I don't doubt FFXI will be affected by the release off FFXIV. Hell, even during FFXIV Beta you could notice a difference, at least on Shiva I could. Seemed about 1/4 of the server was missing during the Beta (from eyeballing doing /sea all)
I wouldn't be surprised in the least after the release of FFXIV, there will be some server mergers. There's been a bunch of chatter amongst various groups I do things with, and it seems like a good majority of them will be moving on to FFXIV.

I know a LS I was in died because everyone left for the BETA of FFXIV....
So... I fully expect people to drop XI.
I won't, because I have no interest in XIV.
But I know a few players who will make the switch.
Will there be a long lasting effect? probably not. at least, not one that is drastically noticeable.
There will always be XI players... there just not be as many in the first few months of XIV's release.

Absolutely. Abyssea was originally FFXI's "farewell" expansion, and if FFXIV does well, I expect they'll do it again post-Adoulin, if FFXIV 2.0 does well enough. Honestly, I see it better as the EQ/EQ2 model. An old MMORPG (and FFXI is -old- at this point) is cheap to run and therefore can make a profit with fewer players. If they finally cut PS2 players out of the expansions in a year or two, it could run on an updated capacity of PC's and Xbox-level consoles for a long, long time.

I'll finally be able to pop these Beastly Shanks.

Luckily I can't afford a new computer for another year just to play FFxiv. By that time it will be make or break. I will say that I feel a server merge would be a good thing. Last night at 9pm (edt) there were 995 people on entire server and you know 1/2 of those were mules and afk, rare shouts and my ls talking about how the majority of the old time players in ls were going to 14.

I have to say I don't think this game is going to survive more than a year past 14 release, the game has half died since the 14 beta release and R/E/M issue. I ran 3 lses and since beta an R/E/M issue 2 are totally dead. I think there will be a good few people that stay like my 1 ls left is populated by players like me who don't want to start another mmo ever, when this game dies my mmo days die with it. but im not sure that there will be enough players left to make new content for, so will prolly finish up with the content they already developed then free to play. iv been on this game 6 yrs and I know allot of peeps been on almost twice as long. all good things come to an end

I cant speak for other servers but shiva seems to be doing fine BUT we are a very heavy JP server I would say 70% of shouts are JP and they run things here they dont seem to leaving for 14 any time soon, I have seen decent drop in English speaking players thou which makes me wonder will the launch of 14 be worse for the JP or NA players of FF11 hehe
