It's a gate to Eorzea. Upon entering, your character us instantly deleted from the FFXI server and you start as level 1 in FFXIV. The dev team finally got tired of trying to smoke everyone out of XI with random number generator bombs.
It's OK though, the true magic of the new gate is that there are no additional steps to transfer your billing. -

Since there hasn't been a similar post like this on the JP forum, it probably isn't related to new content I'd imagine. Maybe some kind of community team event or something. I could be wrong though.
