What I'd love to see (within the remote realm of probable technical possibilities):
A "new chapter" similar to what was done for ToAU. New continent in the present, Vana'diel, not another dimension, not in the future or past.
The Far East, Mithra Homeland, Orcish Empire are all great candidates.
New storyline would be great, new zones would freshen things up, and even a slow (but steady) roll out of this kind of content would keep people like myself interested, while not detracting from things like Voidwatch and Abyssea.
IF (and this is a big if) we absolutely must (due to technical limitations or whatever etc) receive "re-mixed" content, I wouldn't be terribly opposed to new Abyssea zones (especially if it furthers the storyline in a good way LOL). Abyssea dungeons would be terrifying, as well as places like the Yuhtunga Jungle. In my opinion, the Abyssea storyline has so much potential, but felt abruptly short when it was over. I dunno dun listen to me I dunno wat I'm talkin about <(._.)>
Would be awesome to see a new expansion, but it wouldn't be awesome-sauce until they fix existing problems with the game. It would be like adding 22 inch-rims to your car when the motor is ready to break. That's just my two gil.
they are working on something. It was indicated in this article over on Zam.
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=28416
They don't specify exactly what they are working on.
However, they also said when they originally planned the game, they wanted to make cellphone apps for the game but the technology was not there at the time. However the technology is now here, so they are considering making them.
-Another valid point is the increase of 9GB of FFXI (21GB total) of allocated disk space on backward compatible PS3's. They asked for that extra space for a reason. To put it in perspective, ToAU initial install size was around 1.8-1.9 GB (for PC) so you could tack at the most 4 new expansions in that allocated disk space. It could also be the reason why we've gotten such lackluster updates these past couple of months (Working on a new Expansion). They better have something awesome to announce at Vanafest, especially since it wasn't held last year (for obvious reasons , nothing to announce and earthquake recovery)
I doubt it's because they planned 9 more expansion packs, the more buffer room you have on an HDD the better.
I am going with Abyssea-Dynamis for the big Vanafest Announcement. If not Abyssea-Dynamis something similar to Abyssea, IE recolors of zones we have seen before.
I know the news letter from a month or two ago stated "we have a very big surprise for the players, but before you start thinking about that, let's change the subject." or something along those lines.
Are they going to reveal that Mithra's were always male?
I'm laughing at this thread so much...
Ok so let me get this straight, so instead of having an expansion pack that would actually prolong the game and not only that but maybe just maybe renew the faith in SE for FFXI and return player base back, you think increasing the hate cap so that lolPLD can tank (P.S I'm a PLD and a NIN and I honestly could careless about hate cap because I honestly care more about the game rather than a single job's mechanic...)?.... Ya I'm glad we're not selfish and thinking of only our job when the game is dying. I could careless what needs "fixing" in the minds of others, what this game needs is new content to renew the stagnant crap they've been pushing out over our chests for the past year after Abyssea. I mean who honestly thought Abyssea was going to come out after those three worthless add-ons? I can tell you as a player that has stuck with this for a decade now, I was about to quit right after the vanafest.
People are not saying "There will be an expansion!" we are simply saying "There better be or you can expect a loss of player base real quick!" I know of many including myself that are willing to buy our time until June and see what they launch and I can tell you right now, if its anything short of an expansion, I'm out and never turning back. I've been through the ups and downs, and for SE to blatantly disregard the desires of its audience, well than they would have truly let me down as a loyal player for 10 years. All this garbage about "well they need to fix my job cuz my job sucks *wah wah wah*" go QQ that garbage else where if they are going to fix jobs and mechanics, they can damn well do it after they put out an expansion cuz as far as I'm concerned the game is just fine, the problem is there is NOTHING to do in it besides make a shit ton of fancy weapons that you can use on nothing... Yay! I'm glad I get to level up to 99 and make an Almace so I can do VW's forever until the game dies.... /slowclap
So take it this way, we're not asking for an expansion or hoping you will make one SE, we're demanding it...
P.S
For the chick running around and saying SE has been good to us because they gave us Abyssea, what hole have you lived in? Abyssea was great for returning players, but than the people found out how damaging and stagnant it would make for the game later down the road and left. I can tell you right now the hundreds of loyal players that have stuck it out through thick and thin didn't all give up within a year because they got tired of the game.... To say otherwise is ignorance. And woopdie doo get to make an almace! Ya because trying to make a tizona when ToAU came out should of been more than enough to keep my subscription fee for 5 years.... Hell no! After a while I was dying for WotG to come out and when it did, I was completely content. WE NEED STORY AND EXPLORATION TO BE RETURNED TO THIS GAME!... Christ give us something to fill the wikis with SE....
FFXI is pretty much dead. A new expansion will do nothing for this game in a post abyssea world. As I said before, what realistically can they do that will "prolong the game" and "bring players back" if Legion and final Voidwatch chapters didn't bring them back in droves....?
If you can answer that I'll definitely agree an expansion pack will renew faith in SE/FFXI and bring back all 700,000+ people to play again.
Wait... let me get this straight... you honestly thought Voidwatch was going to bring players back!?.... Seriously? Whats going to bring players back by the boat load isn't new battle systems with new gear and w/e, thats all cool, but thats not why players play this game at least back in the day. What will bring them back is a new area, new story, and new places to be explored and unseen beasts to be slain. Nobody started this game because they heard Nyzul was super awesome and totally worth getting into FFXI... And if they did they are not the ones that have stuck by this game since release such as myself.
What we need is a new area where level 99 players can get the shit kicked out of em even if they are in a party, and atmas need to go because it simply makes the game boring. People quit this game because nothing new has really came out, yay more void watch, some new models of gear and beasts, and new annoying NM mechanics /slowclap.
People played this game for the story, the competition, and the challenge, which this game has now severely lost due to Abyssea.
I think this depends on how you look at an expansion. If we're talking new continents, new leveling areas, and most importantly, new stories, I don't think it would be a bad thing. There's even potential endgame, though you'd really need to start "tier"-ing endgame instead of making everything side-grades like it was back in the COP to TAU transition. There's also the opportunities for job changes, adjustments and major overhauls if needed.
There is room for other things with an expansion. The only real downer to me is that "balance" may get in the way and then we end up with more of the same.
Honestly all I have left, Story wise, is to finish A Shantotto's Ascension.Once that's done (have to level a job with ranged attack, because my 3 mains WHM PLD and SMN, don't really have good ranged attack.) I have to reassess whether i want to keep my subscription up. Waiting on the Vanafest announcements and the 2012-2013 roadmap as to whether SE deserves to keep me as a customer for this game.
IF we are going to get new content it isn't likely to happen before they reboot XIV, till then they have mostly a skeleton crew of devs for XI and if the way they are handling XIV is any indication they want to make sure they can devote the resources to any new content to try to bring players. I'm interested to see how they will entice the players on both games honestly, because back when XI came out there were not nearly as many MMOs out there, now they really have to work for it to get new players and keep their old player base
will SE fix the issues with XI, I hope so but to be honest it really doesn't look like they want to bother at this point, but for a long time they have stated that XI will remain around as long as player interest remains, now that player interest is waning will they keep their promises? will they allow us to download the characters we worked so hard on so that should a home-brew server be made we can still use them? who knows, to be honest I have no real confidence in SE at this point, but I keep checking the official site, and the forums in hopes something good will happen and I will want to return to XI
I made some new mules the other day in hopes they will be active long enough for MogBonanza.
The opening cut scenes really, as small as they are, reminded me how far this game has moved from being character and story driven to something of a perpetual item hunt. I realize there has always been items to obtain, but there was also a sense that you cared about what happened in the "world".
I would even forgive a certain lack of new zones if some decent story elements were revived. I keep hoping against hope that one day they will continue the original city rank missions or something along those lines.
/em votes yes for new story driven content.
Everything in the game is story-driven. It's just that most people skip "walls-of-text" or decide to not like previous cutscenes and items together.
I only mentioned that because it was asked several years ago at either Vanafest or the Fan Festival and SE stated that they would find a way for us to get our char information, somehow with XIV though I doubt they will follow through with that
I for one enjoy most of the story lines, its part of the reason I played the game all this time, a nice rich story that a lot of people seem to miss
They will have to announce something, soon, at least by end of summer at the very latest. Guild Wars 2 and Diabol 3 is coming, very soon, that will put a nice dent in their subscription numbers. With no future road map to look forward for and no big news coming to excite their player base - they are facing some sort of drop in subscription. Then again, perhaps they don't care, FFXI already made enough money for them that they can let it die and it won't matter for them since they are banking on FF14 version 2.0. Sad really, so many ways they can make FFXI to continue become a money maker. Heck they should just reboot it as FFXI Version 2.0 the HD edition, maybe once they shut down all the servers - they can revamp it and release it as the offline edition with some online capabilities :)
just because its a silly question and my Ex and I had an odd theory, we didnt think Mithra were male at all, we always figured they were hermaphrodite and the male Mithra staying close to home was just a cover story, then they had to go and spoil that theory with the quests and missions in the WotG expansion...lol
Ive just finished Dawn (finally) it has a great cs at the end of it. I love doing these and while I appreciate not everyone enjoys CS there are still a few of us who do. I would really love to see some revivals back to cs and quest type missions. The hack em and slash em crew have had lots of development for them about time some was back to stories.
Well, if the first mini add ons were about missions, and the second one (abyssea) was about battle content, why not make the next mini add ons as MONSTER BREEDING where you can infuse the stats of the monster into the gears of your choice (ring, earring, back piece, neckpiece, waist piece). They already did an amazing job with FF13-2 and pretty much have the whole ideas of monster breeding down pat perfect, they can transform pankration and infuse it with monster stats breeding and infusion to create the perfect monsters with stats that can be infused to your 5 accessories and mix and match according to situations, think of it as "atmas" via monster breeding :P Basically taking the inspiration from two of the most successful game in Japan, Monster Hunter + Pokemon.
There you go, they announced roadmap for 2012 - not sure if these are things listed for server testing and not implemented till 2013. But there are at least 2 more new battle content so to speak, and one of them is "monster" related :) where you get to play as monster.
Sadly nothing that exciting. It was an exciting idea to play as a monster when they announced Monster vs Monster, but now that XI is pretty much..meh, it has to be the most amazing system ever or 2012-2013 is pretty dull, also note no Atomos.
To quote Robin from Young Justice, the road map for the rest of 2012 leaves me seriously "whelmed" with a tinge of disappointment.
What? People actually expected SE to put the effort into making an entire new expansion?
oh yes.
Reason : they can cover price tag of it as they sell new expansion (we allways get to pay for these so it should self fund ) and also do some return player packs that will boost some return of monthly revenue.
If anything ive learned about Ffxi since i started 04, people may leave take breaks etc but usally come back in time.
Also after the years since the last true new expansion of Toau, that gave us new ares and storyline the new expansions after have been lackluster on new ares due to rehashing of timeline/dimension area's, though wotg did have a nice storyline.
We still got loads of area's mentioned in lore that we havent seen so there is room for it, but i do realize most likely due to 14 hogging a lot of the dev manpower for it's 2,0 any true expansion has probbably been pushed down the timeline.
i wouldnt be surprised if its the make of 14 + the later remake that is partly responsible to our lack of true new expansions into new areas as more dev was moved to the new mmo and was meant to only be temp delay on new expansion but got prolonged after the frenetic work to try fix the fail launch and redo 14, hence probably why we got so much more rehash as the greater bulk of dev team was pushed to 14 to band aid it toghether.
Or it could just have been a decision from leadership to save money due to some of the latest losses.
But Ffxi still got a good crowd, and with some revamp on ui mayby a fix on graphics, a new expansion could pull new players into the game as well as old players that are on break/left.
People, come on!
Think of all the effort that went into the PowerPoint!
There's nothing more important than a good powerpoint slide.
Especially when you consider that a bad powerpoint may have contributed to the Challenger disaster.
(Bad bullet pointing in a NASA powerpoint and a modern version of the telephone game are believed to have caused important details about the space shuttle's status to not reach key officials and thusly caused bad decisions to be made/incorrect instructions given)
Learn something new everyday....
I think the only way you will boost player returns and new subs (old players returning, possibly dragging new RL friends in with them) is by announcing an expansion, kill PS2(maybe even all consoles) and let us explore some of the areas we already know exist in the game. They could have released Abyssea with new areas, from game lore, with the same mechanics, in one massive expansion, and it would have been even bigger in popularity. Sure the story would have to be completely different and more relevant to the rest of the game...
My vote is new expansion, or 3. Doesn't Everquest have like 10+ expansions, and people are still playing that sucker, and it is ooooollllllddd.
They're not going to kill them outright, at least not for another year, but I think the timeline implies that most of their focus (at least through December) is going to be on the PC experience.
Think about it: for years after launch, trying to play the PC version in a window was a bannable offense, on the premise that it gave PC players an unfair advantage. Now, by 2013, even if all the features of Windower aren't implemented within the game, Windower itself will be legitimized. And that's on top of all the UI tweaks the PC already has that the PS2 and even the 360 don't have.
At the very least, they're no longer bound to the idea that all three platforms must be equal; even XIV's PC version will have more bells and whistles than the PS3.
So long as the fundamental game mechanics don't change drastically, there's no reason to kick out the console players, even if the PC got a whole new graphics engine.
