I support this payment idea 100%, just as long as I never have to actually play FF14 again, ever, under any circumstances, for as long as I live, ever, at all.

I was looking at that Reddit shell originally, but since I've only been playing a few days, I didn't want to bother them for a pearl only for my gaming adhd to kick in and end up taking a break from MMOs in general in a week or so. But for the moment, I've hit rank 3 and got my subjob slot unlocked and I'm settling in with leveling up Whm/Blm. IGN Isalyndra, although despite being a returning player who originally started in 2002, I never even got to the Zilart missions, so I'm already in "new territory" as it is, being Rank 3.
You should apply for a Reddit pearl. We help everyone, if you're willing to help yourself. If you take a break, that's fine, but when you come back, if ever, you will have an LS right there for you. We have lots of new players that have never played before, lots of recently returned players, and lots of people that have been there for years.
They want to make more money, not less.
I believe the current plan is "Watch everyone play for the next 2 months until Heavensward releases, then /wave /goodbye to 60%+ of the population for a few months to forever."
FFXI actually has great potential, they just don't know it due to being out of touch with the modern mmo market.
Under a f2p system on pc this game would be a monster of profitability (just as their mobile games are), they have obviously given up on it so there is no reason not to experiment and make it self sustaining.
At this point I think players who are dead against f2p should see it as the lesser of 2 evils, this game simply won't be sustainable once they stop making content for it and it would be a travesty to see this game and world dissapear.
It's a good idea and one I've advocated before. They should at least try it as a last resort if it comes to that.
These two games are so different by design that I doubt any one player would find both of these games ideal. But it would be an incentive to subscribe and give people something else to play during lulls in development that might occur on their preferred game.
All that being said: I think the only thing that has kept this game going is its ability to sustain a profitable subscription base all on its own. If it were to lose that quality: not sure it the company could justify keeping it active.
Majority of ffxiv players really would not want to play a game that is totally different from their own and that looks worse.
They need to find a way to make ffxi profitable again, not give it away as a booby prize to ffxiv players.
although itt'l never happen, I'd certainly love for them to bring this back, it would be easier for me to keep both games active so I can scratch that itch whenever I want :D
This thread is refreshing in a sea of threads full of people resenting FFXIV's existence and bashing it just because it exists. I love both games, and I'd love to be able to hop back and forth whenever.
