It all began with a stone, or so the legends say. In ages past, a sentient jewel, enormous and beautiful granted Medallions.

Zoning and Medallion served a purpose in the original versions of WoE. Their goal was to create an artificial gate to slow down player progress so they couldn't spam fluxes over and over and over.
As it stands now those limitations are long gone, and the medallion serves no purpose at all.
It's not a gil sink, it's not a gating anymore since you can get as many as you want even within the same vana'diel day.
It's just a remnant of an old system, its only purpose atm is to annoy players with pointless zoning.
They should just turn it into a permanent Key Item.
Pay 100k or something and get perma, there, done it.
You know how you need to zone out and back in to get a follow up quest from an npc? that's a limitation of the engine the game runs on, a lot of things are simply static until you reload the zone. You have to keep in mind that this game is very old and the server systems it runs on are that old as well, a lot of things that are nothing to new titles put a huge load on the server for FFXI.
Same deal with WoE KI, stuff like this would require a fairly big change to the software/servers so it's not going to happen.
Either I misunderstood you or you're mistaken.
The need to zone for some quests/cutscenes (which has been removed for some) is more of a developer choice, rather than a necessity of their "engine".
Either way, even supposing it was a necessity, I don't see how this relates to WoE since we're saying they should remove that cutscene (which, that too, is boring, annoying and pointless after the first time) and make the medallion into a permanent key item.
No more need to get the medallion to enter Fluxes > No more need to get the mini cutscene > no more need to zone > profit.
While this is absolutely true, 9 times out of 10 it's more an excuse to let things stay as they are, rather than a REAL limitations.Quote:

They kinda showed it.
How many times we've been told for over 10 years "omg we can't change it! Old servers/PS2 limitations!" and yet they proved themselves wrong over the last year?
How many times third party app developers told us that many of the motivations they are exposing to us are just silly excuses?
Etc etc.
So yes, while I'm pretty confident there are really some complicated situations because of their old architecture (which is less old than many of you think), I'm also pretty sure 9 times out of 10 it's just an excuse.
How can you know that making it permanent would require a "fairly big change"? Which aspects or factors are you using to get to this conclusion?Quote:

How can you tell the zoning and medallion thing was something they developed because of technical architectural limits and NOT for game design direction choices?
That's easily solved by putting a temporary debuff if you exit the flux too fast since when you entered. Kinda like there is a debuff in FFXIV or WoW if you quit dutyFinder/LookingFor too fast, which forbids you to use them again for X minutes.
Something like this would be very simple to implement and it would only address the right players, more or less, instead of the whole population.
