And again, you can always /blockaid to stop it from happening if you start suspecting that someone is trying to grab hate off of you and run off with the mob. In general, you can't really kill-steal in this game without specifically attempting to do so, so you don't have to worry about it. It is kind of good etiquette to not start camping right on top of someone else though, when there are other options available. At least I attempt to avoid this.
Word of advice for the OP of this thread though: If you are fighting a mob that can charm players, you might lose claim on the mob if the person who last acted on the mob was charmed, because this player is no longer targeting the enemy. To prevent the monster from going white, and therefore also claimable by someone else, it is smart to have a ranged/mage player perform a quick, hostile action on it as fast as possible to ensure that the monster stays claimed to your party.
Mobs that charm generally make for some hilarious moments in either case. A while ago, a friend of mine was killing an orc NM in dynamis, which charmed him. The moment he was charmed, another player engaged the mob and stole it from us. I got there right after that had happened, so we just sat back and waited for the NM to charm him again, then one-shot him with a blood pact. The amount of rage from that player was pretty amusing to listen to.

Yeah, it's not like I'm trying to learn how to kill steal, rather the opposite. But by knowing how it happens, I can avoid doing so by accident. Just so no one misunderstands me here. :P
Mirage: thanks for the tip! :)
