So it is an SE Issue, but it seems to affect only some ISP, after 1 day trying to connect every 10 min w/o success i connected my PC to my Iphone Shared 3Gconnection and now i can log-in. So at lest there's a solution for some of us until they fix it ^^
BTW my home connection is videotron, many ppl seems to have issue with them.
My Iphone is with Rogers and i've been in game for a good while w/o issue so far
After so many people complaining about this still no 1 word from SE.

A simple "we are looking into it and will fix it as soon as possible" would be enough (for me anyways).
Being as it is I don't think SE is even doing anything to fix this...
Shame I enjoy FFXI so much because the customer support is really not that good.
Was having the same trouble until I get tired and reset router/modem. For now on, I'm having the message when i hit PLAY on FFXI menu: «You have no Content ID for FINAL FANTASY XI. Please obtain a new Content ID or reactivate a cancelled one in order to play the game and/or to use the PlayOnline services.». I made a new post about that problem. In my opinion, it must be a trouble with the new payment thing, as my friend who made the transfert can`t play anymore and my friend who didn`t still enjoying the game. It`s just my two cents.
Have you moved your account to a SE account? The stuff they were talking about recently, not the linking that was done a long time ago.

Well, go to the square enix account management then and see if your characters are active there or not.
