well many people have a big problems when they wanna back play ffxi, the reason is the secure code, why ffxi doesn't have same methd like ffxiv?, is easy bought crystals and your could forgot the secure code
in console is good but in pc is a sad story

They cannot change payment because SE has a contract with playonline. So Payment goes throu them, and henceforth why playonline isnt being used in FFXIV,
They're moving FFXI over to SquareEnix accounts. PlayOnline was never a seperate company, so there was no contract, the game was just coded for the support.
With the switch, you should be able to use Crysta for FFXI, which means you can buy Crysta cards.
