Transferring to achieve a rename

Having read SE's absolute refusal to implement name changes in FFXI :mad: .. even though XIV's had it since 2013 and it's used a lot .. I know the only way to do it in XI is to mess with transfers and name collisions.

Can someone please confirm that there is now a 3 DAY cooldown instead of the 3 MONTH one that existed when the paid transfer system was added, which is the only time I've ever used it.

Can you confirm that using this method, on day 1 you can transfer off your home world and on day 4 you can transfer back to it and deal with the renaming at that time, is that right?

but to be frank, in the past I read something SE had posted which wasn't accurate because a change in policy had been overlooked, which is why I'm cautious about this now.

I think them being Japanese, they don't understand how much people would use this feature. Sad really, they just don't have anyone working on this game that is more business minded, they have the opposite problem on XIV. On my last MMO I paid for so many race / character change services and lots of others did too, that was at $9.99 a pop.


Anyway I server swapped and was able to move again after 3 days. To change name, just swap over to a new world and then make a new character on your home world with the name you have. When you swap back your name at the login screen will be gold and you will be prompted to change it before you can login.

It makes no sense they won't allow it give the feature is already automated and built into the game lol

Thanks for confirming what I thought was an obvious situation, but having been caught out once I didn't want to be caught again.

It does seem the XI team are stuck in the 1990s whereas the team on XIV as you mention understand what a 'modern' MMO should be .. the AMA clearly shows it's entirely a 'philosophical' position, nothing technical.

I find it interesting to contrast this with XIV as there too, Yoshi stated a very long time ago he understood people get attached to their characters, with the name being one of the most important factors, yet that didn't stop him having the team build a name-change mechanism for those players who wished to make use of it.

Clearly everything technically is in place with XI to do it, the face that a transfer can flag a name change is required means that it would be trivial to provide a web-based mechanism like the transfer which simply forces the name-change flag as the transfer system obviously does. :(
