Amphitere type monsters wont attack.

Usually, walking underneath these monsters will cause them to drop out of the sky and attack, but i could not get this to happen at all. After trying to do this in Xarcabard{S} and Beaucedin Glacier{S}, I went to Abyssea-Konschat to try the NM Turul. I found him walking along the ground, not up in the air. And nothing i did would make him attack me. I even tried using an Area of Effect weaponskill on another monster to get it to hit Turul.

as far as i could tell you need to be by it head for it to see you when its in the air

They are tricky to aggro

I've found being in front of them, something like 10-20 yalms in the direction they face is where they aggroed me. (recently went hunting in the B glacier (s) and Xarc(s) for blu spell.)
