Why can't we create on servers being merge TO?

I have a friend who wants to play the game and just started his account when the servers went up assuming that because Bahamut was being merged into, he would be able to start playing. However, it seems character creation on Bahamut has been locked. Can a gold pass get around this, or is he screwed out of his free time till the merger?

Character creation has been disabled on all worlds affected by the merger (source and destination). There is no way around it unless they re-enable character creation. I doubt they will, though.

Is there any way to do something about this? I bought a friend a copy of the game in order to play with him, but I'm on Caitsith. This means I can't play with him for two months, in which time he'll need to buy a transfer pass. Is there any way to get him in, since the merger won't happen for two months?

Bitch at SE to do something to change it. It's rather silly that they're closing the 'source' worlds for that long. The 'destination' worlds, it's pretty understandable.

Stops people stealing names and I guess it makes it easier to merge the databases over a long period of time as opposed to having to do it just during the maint time.

While we’re sorry to hear of the trouble you are having, unfortunately there is not anything that can be done. As we prepare for the World Merge, several steps must be taken, including the suspension of character creation on the Source and Destination Worlds.

We can only suggest that you and your friend create characters on a World that has not been affected, and enjoy the game until the time that the World Merge is complete. You can then either have your friend create a new character on your preferred server, or you can transfer those existing characters through use of the World Transfer Service.
