View Full Version : Please get around to implementing the Colosseum, or tell us what it was going to be.

No one really knows for sure what it was going to be for, but we do know that it was never implemented. Please, get around to implementing whatever it was you were going to put there; we at least deserve to know what it was supposed to be.
For those not in the know, I'm not talking about The Pit. The Colossem has two maps- One of them is The Pit, for Pankration. The other was a much smaller map, and has another entrance in Whitegate; but its true purpose was never established and it was never released. There's still an NPC there with a locked door behind him.
I'm pretty sure the consensus among the community was that it was going to be some sort of arena for people to have duels or something, but it was never officially established, as far as I know.

I just find it hilarious that they still haven't added it, and are already talking about "we want to work more on pankration"... like they've gone a whole cycle on whitegate content and gotten back to the start, without passing the Colloseum.
They should just make the colloseum let you watch all cutscenes you've unlocked in the whole game. That would be great.

I'd like to know what its purpose was too, if the devs have no intention of implementing whatever it's intended purpose was.

PS2 limitations....
...ok, now that is thrown out there, maybe they might realize now that they have something they could add to ToAU content.

Is this the location where Assault rank up CSs take place? The location for those CSs doesn't exactly look like the pit.

PvP arena or it is an egregious waste.

The majority of people at a colossuem are in the audience. While it certainly isn't the whole point of the place, it would be nothing wrong with just sitting on the benches watching something.

Instead of a PvP area, some type of BCNM-style content would be neat; but not a rehash of the existing content with a new kind of seal or anything...
Perhaps, instead of saving up seals and buying an orb or somesuch, you could do a series of quests to force an NM you want to be brought to the Colosseum for you.
Example:
Trade a farmed Ex "Eyeball Item" to the Colosseum NPC.
Be granted a Magian Trial-like KI that records Hecteyes kills that were worth EXP - complete the trial.
Return to NPC and pay 5k Imperial Standing to commission a "capture team" to be sent to the Maze of Shakrami.
Wait until the next Conquest Tally.
Return to Colesseum and be granted a forced spawn of the NM Argus, identical to the one that would be found in the wild.
Something like this would be fun, especially if there was a way to enter as a spectator for others' fights - unable to affect them in any way - and wager controlled amounts of gil on victory/defeat/drops/etc. Or perhaps a system where cheering for the participants could affect the outcome.
For example:
Cheering for the PC gives them small buffs - if /cheer were used, perhaps every use of /cheer or /clap by spectators paid the participants a small amount of TP.
Cheering for the Monster gives them small buffs, like the TP idea above, or perhaps an adjustment to elemental weaknesses, or some such - but doing so increases an effective "Treasure Hunter" level on the mob. So if people make the mob harder by cheering for it, the PCs in the battle have improved chances of getting their drops should they win.
I know this is an out there idea, and it obviously is not tested for balance, but something like this would be much more interesting than PvP duels.

More people would be cheering for the Mob even without the TH effect. They would want to see some noob die.
But I'm actually all for your idea.

but something like this would be much more fun than PvP duels. I won't say your idea isn't cool, because it is, but it's a matter of opinion whether duels or any kind of PvP is fun to you. As long as it doesn't impact anyone else's ability to play what they want to play, PvP has its place.

In my haste I used fun instead of interesting - I am aware of the subjective nature of the word fun and placing it in that sentence was a mistake I shall correct with editing now. Interesting may also be a subjective term, but it better captures what I had intended.
While your sentiment is true - I would argue that it would be wasteful to add another way to PvP to the game.

The dev cost of implementing "another way" to PvP is subjective also. As it currently stands PvP is extremely inaccsessible due to the current set up of needing ballista points to reserve areas, having no open "free for all" area for new guys to check it out no strings attached, and let's not even get into the silly capped aspect of it currently.

While a valid point, my use of the word "wasteful" was not in the context of invested funds or manhours, it was more pointed at the opportunity presented by the colesseum to add something different while finally answering the OPs question. The waste would be in spending the colosseum concept on PvP and leaving Ballista, et al., in their current state. It would make more sense to me to do something new and different with the colosseum, and then put some work into the existing PvP events to make them more accessable/balanced/approachable/etc.
That is what I meant by...
...it would be wasteful to add another way to PvP to the game.
But, I am no authority on the matter - I am merely tossing out ideas for discussion.

I'd like to think both of those ideas, the player vs enemy, and new revamped PvP could both be solved with the coliseum. Just have matches waiting on a "reserve a slot" list. No reason for the two ideas to be in contention.

While your sentiment is true - I would argue that it would be wasteful to add another way to PvP to the game. Frankly, I find it frustrating when I'm doing ballista and one or two people suddenly cry out in the middle of a fight "Don't touch us, we're 1v1ing".
That would be a thing of the past if there was some way to duel.
I think this is what most people expected the area to be.
Keep in mind, it's a tiny area- the whole walkable space is the same size as one of the four battle cages in the pit.

I just hope the Devs will get around to it before the end of next year.
That's being generous too, considering ToAU has been out since 2006... >.>
I think it's going to be an area for PvP, BCNM, and popable NMs with areas for people outside of the battles can watch. Maybe even a true Colosseum where you would PvP then they release strong NMs and mobs on the kombatants. Another idea would be similar to some of the past final fantasy games where there was a battle arena type of mini game. Coming to mind is in FF7 the battle arena in Gold Saucer and the monster arena in FFX. The way the game has been going with abyssea and voidwatch it seems that popable NMs that are extremely large and tough is where the colosseum is going to be headed too along with the PvP options.

PvE endurance matches like in previous FF games would be interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing the random buff / enfeeble effects similar to what happened in 7.

I am hoping it's going to be the Arena where you have to fight Maat and his brother Degenhard to break to 99 after you have completed a series of quests or have accomplished certain things outside of Abyssea. :) You will be able to invite your friends to watch as Maat casts Meteor on you while Degenhard pummels you with 100 Fists. GIMME!

I always imagined the Colosseum was going to be 1vs1 player matches with spectators able to watch but with the ability to augment your stats sorta like how abyssea is. Basically you start out low ranked and work your way up obtaining gear specially designed for the collesium. Tweak around the abilities a tad not to make them to overpowering and add a blue like system where you can only set a certain amount of JA/JT and magic to use it combat so one person doesn't have an overpowering advantage over another.
Like say a warrior vs a redmage. They have 50 alottement points to work with when setting their abilities.
For RDM let's say
Slow----5 points
Slow II--15 points
Paralyze----5 points
Paralyze II--15 points
Blizzard-----1 point
Blizzard II---2 points
Blizzard III--5 points
Blizzard IV--10 points
Cure-----1 points
Cure II---2 points
Cure III--5 points
Cure IV--15 points
Fast Cast I-V--- 1-2-4-8-15 (Total not accumulative)
MaB I-III--------1-5-10
Shield Mastery---5
Convert----20
Composure-10
So with something like this RDM could set
Fast Cast V-15
MaB III-----10
Cure IV-----15
Blizzard IV--10
50
In combat the RDM would only have access to those abilities and traits however you could mix and match based on own preference.
There could also be a way to gain abilities and traits only used in the Colosseum to add even more customization to the mix, as well as mystery to what the player could be planning.
I dunno I just think it be cool to have a Colosseum idea implemented like this, it would definitely add a lot of unique setups and interesting matchups. Now that I think about it, it would proly be wise to also add WS to the point system where multi-hit WS take more points to use compared to others.
If the reps comment were suggesting that they do have plans to release the coliseum I hope it's something that can be balanced for all jobs to enjoy rather then a place where only a select few can actually enjoy it with the job of their choice.
Taint2
06-23-2011, 04:44 AM
A series of mobs for each job would be sweet. Solo battles with different paths for each job. 10 mobs with rewards for 3,6,9,10 and make it go from easy to extreme with the end reward being a nice piece of AF with augment choices.
wow 2 another 2 years on SHAMELESS NECRO BUMP FTW picked up the map for al zhabi on a mule yesterday and the npc reminded me that it also includes the map for the collosseum........ for real now waht is it or what was it going to be? i rememeber the update nots when pokemon (or w/e that crap was where we had to go out and take pictures of mobs was) which stated the implimention of the colosseum was delayed for a future version update god knows how many years ago that was

Love this thread. Any time my friends and I get into an omg can't wait for this to be put in I always bring this up. Seriously put it in already or take out the poor npc that mentions it and take it off the damn map.
It was supposed to be a PvP where even a lv 10 could have a chance at beating a lv 75. Or something like that from what I remember. Got all hot n bothered about it but now it's my shh don't get to excited about the new feature or it will become the next colosseum bit with my friends.

I would like to see a 6 versus 6 PvP last man standing style event.
Basically, you have a balanced party for each team. Once a player dies, they are eliminated. They can come back and help their team, though. Once all six members of a team are KO'd, the other team wins. They can receive points for gear. There would be a time limit of about 30 minutes just in case. If one team has fewer losses when the time runs out, that team would win.
Whenever people participate in Ballista for 1vs1, it is really pointless. This is because jobs are not designed this way. They are designed to be in parties. With 6vs6, you would have all jobs fulfilling their roles. Black Mages would be sleeping and nuking. Red Mages would be enfeebling and using gravity when players try to get away. Paladins would be protecting the mages. White Mages would actually need to cure to keep their parties alive. It would create a fun PVP that everyone would enjoy. A 1vs1 system would quickly die off. If this was fun, people would be doing it in the custom Ballista arena. Instead, 6vs6 is the perfect solution. By making it so players need to be protected (even the lowliest), you would have the Paladins actually protecting people, the Red Mages actually enfeebling people, and all of the jobs fulfilling their roles.
Each unique KO (if a WHM dies five times, it would only count as one KO) would result in a point. Once a team has 6 points, they win.
The arena should be small (about the size of the Mother Globe area). Each team should be forced into a standard six person party. Other arrangements could be used, but you would be at a disadvantage if you only had 3 people that needed to be KO'd because the other team would only need to get 3 points then if you only had 3 people on your team. Both teams should be able to see all players on the map. They should all be able to communicate via linkshell chat but only the individual parties should see the party chat.
After getting points for a match, you would eventually be able to trade in 100 points or so for gear pieces that can actually be used outside of PvP.
This should be a simple event with no gimmicks!
No balls to pick up. No goals to pass through. No boundaries to avoid. Just good and simple last man standing.
