View Full Version : [Fishing] Less "You didn't catch anything."
Basically, I'd like to see less "You didn't catch anything." when Fishing.
Make it into gear, update the Fishing system, make more expensive/potent bait, do whatever is needed, I'd just like to hook things more often.
Current gear has shown little to no change in this, for me anyways.
I've said this a couple times in other places, but I find the way our character fish to be a bit weird in general.
Cast line, wait a couple game minutes [to us, a couple seconds], either hook something, or reel the line in and cast in the same exact spot for another chance.
If I had real control over my character in this situation, I'd leave my line out until I caught something. =P
Either way, for the most part I have no qualms with the skill-up rate of Fishing, but I do however really dislike how I usually only get 1 fish every 10 casts or so, and most of the other casts being absolutely nothing. With Pelican Ring, I could gain between 1 and 4 Fishing Skill per day off 200 Fish, this isn't terrible at all, however 200 Fish takes all day at higher levels. 200 Moat Carp went by in only a couple hours, in comparison. Dx
tl;dr
Fishing needs to actually give fish more often. QQ. More fishing updates please. Etc.

You only get 20+ didn't catch anythings in a row when you've hit fatigue cap.
Also fish are catchable on timers, or windows, there's no gear that can bypass a string of you didn't catch anything, it isn't just bad luck. Everyone fishing the same type of fish all are simultaneously unable to catch that fish when the window is closed.
Also, it only takes about 3 hours to hit fatigue cap in talacca cove with lu shang and lv90+ fishing.
Obviously they could make the windows smaller, like 1 minute on 1 minute off instead of 5 on 5 off.

Yeah I've read similar things here and there.
I don't know the timers, and I don't exactly plan on learning them anytime soon. [Except maybe on Hakuryu in the far future, if possible.]
But, as-is, it takes me around 6-8 hours to hit fatigue lately. Currently doing Pterygotus in Nashmau with Lugworms.
Prior to this, was doing Shrimp Lure Ahtapots/Mercs and it wasn't all that much faster than this either.
Of course, just spamming casts.
It feels like Fishing takes longer for less profit than most crafts/options these days, so I definitely think it needs more tweaks like the previous update. I'd definitely hit this as a priority.

Well no one knows what timers the fish are on yet. This is just recently discovered info. I just wanted to let you know it isn't random, and it would take more than a piece of gear or a small tweak to decrease the rate of didn't catch. As that is how the devs limit the fish catch rate. If say.. they only want you catching 200 pterygotus every 6-8 hours, then what could they do to limit you to that without the "you didn't catch anything" messages?
Like you said they could just make it so you don't reel in your line til you hook a fish, but then you're going to be sitting there for a full five minutes staring at your screen waiting on a bite.
They could increase the wait time between casts like it was a really long time ago. Or maybe they could make the minigame more difficult and make it so it takes you a full 2 minutes to reel in a fish.
Yeah you're right though, fishing gil/hr does seem a bit low compared to abyssea. Ebisu doesn't really fix that either, I think about 120k/hr and fishing for about 8 hours gets you hitting fatigue on hakuryu and black sole. Would be nice to condense that down to something like 200k/hr for 4hrs.

well then that number is obsured. It pissed me off spending all that time making my bait that day, then traveling all the way out to sea serpent grauto, and not even ten minutes into it, i get 20 'didnt catch anythings' in a row. Considering even more i had good rob/bait combo, and hadnt fished a long while before that. No reason i should hit cap THAT quick.
Actually, if my character left his line in the water and didn't reel back in on the "You didn't catch anything" messgae, I think that'd be pretty fucking brilliant of SE.

You could just listen for the music change I suppose. I have music muted on mine though.

You mean, for example:
Cast line.
"You didn't catch anything."
But, don't reel in the line?
Would be a good change, at the very least not requiring you to go through the trouble of switching back and forth from casting.

I'm not even a fisher (I have it at about 13-14, and that was done back in like early '05, before they even made fishing all interactive in a futile attempt to try and stop fishing bots), but this definitely annoyed me when doing quests in Abyssea that involved fishing up monsters. I would sit there casting my line over and over, and get a bite maybe once in every 10-20 casts. It was ridiculous, especially since it's in Abyssea, where you're constantly running down your time in the zone.

lol, I've had to fish Crocodilos in Abyssea a few times [I still need to, haven't gotten the Puffin Ring yet.], and needless to say it was a pain. I only caught about 16 in my full 120 minutes. Given, about 4-6 of them were lost due to lack of skill, but still.
This is with a Noddy Ring on to lower the chance of fishing up monsters, too.
