It's probably best to simply dismiss Malamasala/Mellowy.

The jobs best suited for tarus are probably BLM or SCH, but please don't feel like you absolutely have to play those jobs. The most important thing to do is play the job(s) you enjoy on a character you like. If you end up playing a taru MNK, that's fine. Own it and rock it.

Play Ninja so you can do backflips! Think MNK gets that, too... :)

With Asuran Fists, yes.

As for job choice, choose a job you enjoy. I don't think race is as much a detractor as everyone thought it was back in the day. I know my Elvaan WHM has outperformed many a Taru WHM in the MP department, and I've seen Taru WARs slaughter a Galka WAR's damage.

"Own it and rock it" that made me lol :)

I want to play a job that is good for the race so: smn, blm or sch (as suggested) one of these I am going to play

which should I choose from these 3?

BLM. The other two are red-headed stepchildren at best, useless at worst. inb4 crapstorm.

Edit: Serious response, they've been working on equalizing racial stats a lot lately. The gaps are not nearly as big as they used to be, and will taper off even more by 99. I would just play whatever you enjoy. It makes very little difference in the end.

Emergency Food Source, Door Mat, Football, Cannon Fodder, Rage Release Target. Take your pick, these are what I use tarus for. /seriousface

BLM, SMN.

As has been explained to you already, race is mostly irrelevant. Play the job you want. More than likely you'll end up playing multiple jobs, like most people do.

That's like saying what is your favorite color?
Its how you play the job that determines how good you are.

But to answer your question its beastmaster.

Only 6k as a taru?

I hit 13k as a hume BLM....

Serious note, anything works. All you have to do is learn your multitude of jobs as best as you can.

op: mnk is the best dd for taru since it makes up for the low hp. Mnk isn't a bad job choice at all.

Play what the bloody hell you like mate. Taru gets a boost in magey jobs, but hey, if a Galka can nuke like a ho then a taru can pummel the hell out of a mob's balls so that it sings like Aled Jones. There are ways of compensating for your stumpiness. I've teamed up with taru fulfilling all kinds of positions in a party. Only taru DD I've struggled to keep alive was the one who consistently used Souleater in an alliance, but he still lived. :)

Erm...taru MNK wins solely because they have the best Asuran Fists animation...

If you are going to determine jobs by animation, then wouldn't Mithra be the best race in the game?

I mean, they got their two biggest assets in front of them 24/7, and with the right gear, they can come out and play often...

You don't even need as much MP as a Taru SMN gets.

Anyway.... Any job works fine for any race. I exaggerate above only to say that "Taru is the best SMN" is nonsense. Any race will do just fine or better.

Because racial traits actually make a difference.

The only benefit of galka is the ~400 HP in aby, which can be made up by HP merits on hume. Not to mention Galkas are generally dumb as beans and merit MP. Otherwise, Galka are pretty poor.

Honest answer for OP: BLM, and only BLM.

Honest answer from my opinion: Hume is the master race. I can play WAR and BLM and not suck at one or the other.

I don't know Taru are still best suited for the back line jobs because as the level caps increase the gap between a Taru HP and any other races HP are getting much bigger. While Atmas can help make this gap up. Someday 5000 years from now we'll be out of Abyssea and doing something else and that's where you're atmas will serve you no more. Now obviously the Taru was made with BLM in mind (highest MP, highest INT) but if you're looking for a melee class I would consider NIN or DNC. With evasion, ninjitsu and/or dances your HP really won't be that big of an issue and Taru fall well into these jobs due to them having the 2nd highest base AGI of all the races. And to Leonlionheart, while you may not suck at them you'll never be as great at them as a race that was made for them.

That's true, but then again since I job change around so often between drastically different jobs that handful of differences that make the other races 'better' at one thing or another really start to even out.

Plus Hume has the best stats for general BLU use.

If you're just returning to the game, things you might want to consider before choosing your job are:
How much gil do you have?
SMN costs a hell of a lot less to level than BLM. A lot of BLM scrolls now go for several hundred k, so it's not an ideal choice if you're stuck for cash, unless you have friends that can help you to farm the dropped scrolls and quest the quested ones that you can't solo. And that's assuming you didn't already quest scrolls and sell them to gear your mnk.
Are you starting from scratch or continuing your 65 mnk char?
If you're continuing, I'd personally continue with mnk to 90, levelling nin, war and dnc to 49 as support jobs. Some mnk gear is quite expensive, but most of that is obtainable from NMs that you can kill @65. You can probably equip yourself with many of the best items for your level, for under 1 mil gil (with current AH prices on phoenix). You may struggle to find a weapon on the AH, but if you fancy doing SMN later and have a friend help you to kill shiva, you can get yourself a decent weapon there for free^^
Once you get your first job to 90, you'll find it incredibly easy to make gil, through quests, killing NMs, using cruor to get armour/weapons and NPC them (be careful about doing this too regularly during your first 90 days though! people have been banned for this because SE thinks they're RMT). Once you make gil, you could then embark on your next job.
As I said, SMN is very cheap to level, so if you're returning on a new account, or just can't re-activate your old char, I would advise levelling whm to 18, then blm to 25, then whm to 30. Unlock smn and level away up to lvl 15 with carby (unless you have friends who can kill the prime avatars for you - but this requires much more fame). At this point you can start the mini avatar fights, but you need to get your fame up. You might wish to include the quests for BLM & WHM scrolls as you build your fame.

Another alternative is to level THF. It makes getting gil much easier, and some of the best gear is obtainable by camping NMs.

So, I'd say job choice comes down not to your race, but how much fame/gil you have, whether you have high level friends that can help you etc. etc. etc.
Also bear in mind, that in today's game it's very easy to let your skills fall behind as you level so fast, even if you solo. This makes SCH a nice option as either main or sub to boost your skills to B rate even if they are way under that. SMN doesn't suffer too badly from having underskilled smn magic, it simply doesn't receive the boost from it being over cap. It is however, one of the worst skills to skill up. H2H hits very quickly, so it will not take long to re-cap even if you didn't get a single skill up between 65 and 90.

Maat is also something to think about. Some maats are much easier than others. I found SMN really easy at 68 when I did it as my first job. BLM was also really easy but I did that at 90. Doubt it's much harder at 70 though. I haven't tried mnk yet, but it is 67 so far and I plan to try it once I gear it up.

Babekeke's post is generally right, so just adding/reinforcing/correcting a couple of things...

BLM Maat is absolute cake. I fought him at BLM66 and went 1/1, with (looking back) not a lot of prepwork. Most Maat fights aren't too bad, with the (extremely, I hear) notable exception of RDM, which is apparently absolutely awful. However, if you want to main BLM, be prepared to shell out a lot of gil for scrolls; -ga3 and AM spells tend to be among the most expensive, and as a BLM in Abyssea you'll be expected to have all of both, plus tier IIIs and IVs.

SMN is indeed cheap to level. Most of their gear is either Ra/Ex or things you'd want to use for other mage jobs. In addition, they only have eight scrolls, five of which are cheap. Minor correction: mini avatar fights are level 20, not 15, but that's not a huge deal. And yeah, while summoning magic skill sucks pretty badly to skill up, you also won't see nearly as much penalty for having it gimped as, say, a BLU with low blue magic skill.

But commenting more toward the main point of the topic, I'll fall back on the old mantra of "skill > gear > race". Your race shouldn't make much of a notable impact on much of anything, except perhaps the differences in HP and MP. Taru will generally be slightly worse at melee jobs due to their comparatively low HP and combat stats, but it's not a crippling weakness.

FTFY

seriously though, skill in FFXI only matters for a few select jobs, and even then it's fairly easy to figure out what your doing quickly if you actually are looking to get better at the job.

;-; I like being mediocre, It means I can do everything just good enough!

Seriously though, you can be whatever so play the job you want and just gear it well. If you want to go purely natural stat based, pick a mage job.

(OP topic: last paragraph)
Fixed again, the reality is that it goes player's skill > combat/magic skill >= gear > aby-gimp skill > race. Your ability to play the game and understanding of various tactics is bar-none the most important thing. Aby-burn your way to 90 and you won't know how to play your job, but I'll touch more on that later. Second comes your combat/magic skills and gear. It largely depends on the job, but often times, if your skills aren't up to par (par, not cap), you'll have a hard time performing well. Cap is always helpful, but by no means required. At 75, the majority of your used skills should be 200+ to be used effectively. However, gear also comes into play because sometimes (ex: WHM) gear will help your job more than your skills will (ex: Cure potency).

However, when you burn through abyssea your skills don't catch up. So not only do you not know how to play your job, but you suck at it too. So, your combat skill will help less than gear will if your skills are super-gimp. That said, no amount of awe-inspiring top-tier gear will completely fix a player that doesn't know his job and has low skill. And naturally at the very bottom of it all is race. They say SE is racist because there are no black people in FFXI, but when a galka can nuke and a taru can slash, there isn't much diffrence between the in-game races. I will say though, it takes a certain person to play a taru. They always seem to be the most fun guys.

For an example of the above, I am a hume SCH and I Blizz IV for as much as a few of the BLMs in my LS Blizz V, and don't get me started on enfeebling. Low player skill + low combat/magic skill + full Teal/Pink/Pearle gear = overall poor player.

OP: BLM is by far the job suited for Taru, much like THF/DNC are the jobs for Mithra. SCH too works for taru, but you have to try harder to be on-par with BLM and WHM. Bonus is you never have to worry about your magic skills, since they are always capped when using your arts. That said, every race has something to bring to the table for every job (in Abyssea, even a well prepared/atma'd taru can tank most mobs).

Except Galka DNC. That brings a gag-reflex.

Any male DNC is automatic gag-reflex.

Except Tarus, but only because you can't tell the difference between male and female characters at all. I rather call them asexual though, instead of gender confused, because they aren't any guys dressing up as girls (see: Dancer) or girls dressing up as guys (see: Marines), but just hard to tell. No bumps on the front to be an automatic telltale sign.
