SE says on this matter:

Does it cost money to have another security token issued?

We will replace your security token free of charge if its battery runs out within 3 months, but for any other reason, you will need to purchase a new security token.
For details regarding purchasing another security token, please contact the Information Center.

Security Tokens

How long does the security token's battery last?

Because the battery's life depends solely on how frequently the token is used, we cannot give a specific length of time, but please remember to purchase a new security token soon after the battery begins running low.

Thanks alot SE, think itsa time for me to move on with my gaming life. The fact that ive been playing for 6years+ and paying for all the new updates and crap is not enough. To have to buy another is just another way for SE to get more money out of me and everyone else who bought one. With all the technology that they possess,u think a battery cover or a way to change them would have been an easy solution for their devoted patrons.
Thanks for the reply Zenoxio.when my battery does die so does my account.

I think you can deactivate it. My friend got one and remove the token.

You do understand that having to use the tokens is almost definitely a net loss in cost for SE, right?

they need to implement a trade in policy, sort of like a core exchange policy. Order a replacement and link to it, then get an RMA number to send your old one back for a credit on your next bill or something. There should be no reason why they couldn't replace the battery and re-init the token for someone else to use. So long as the old one isn't too battered, they could just resell it, or maybe drop the guts into a new plastic case and resell it.

How often have you been using your token? I'm still using my original one (that i won from a contest so I had it before everyone else) and it's still working fine. Baby spamming the button or something?

Stocking on these security dongles are a very bad idea though as they're basically digital clocks with an secret mathematical formula which generates the passwords. It works because the dongle is set with the same date/time as the login server and the login server also knows the secret mathematical formula to re-create the password. Once the battery is gone, the dongle loses sync with the server and that's why you need a new one. The generated password will never match again.

The tokens are what? $10.00? Just get a new one if your old one dies. It's normal for things to wear out and have to be replaced. Would you swear "Never again will I walk!" if your shoes ever wear out?

C'mon man. Live a little.

Just disable it and use some common sense on the internet. Don't download shady stuff, don't share passwords with people you can't physically visit and punch in the face if something happens.

I seriously doubt they're making money on these, sending them halfway across the planet for just a total cost of 10 bucks. It's a service they're offering, you don't have to use it. You can play fine without it.

My security token sob story is I sent it back I think 2 years ago for replacement/fixing because it was not working and to this day I haven't received it back. I called a couple of times and the operators told me there was nothing they could do and that is was sitting in their repair facility.... two years, but hey what can I expect for $10 bucks right? The additional problem was when I went to go buy another because hey that's 80 free inventory spots, they were not selling them anymore my guess was to stock up for sale with the FF XIV game. So I got one for the $70 it cost to get FF XIV. Security token cost total out of pocket = $80 ftw!

To have to buy another is just another way for SE to get more money out of me and everyone else who bought oneThere's no conspiracy. There is no way to replace the battery without making your token lose sync with the clock on the time server when it was made. If you replace the battery, the token will no longer work.

SE DID NOT MAKE THE SECURITY TOKEN. THEY CONTRACT WITH A THIRD PARTY COMPANY TO MAKE THEM. The EXACT same token is used in world of warcraft.

My token has lasted since the first day I recieved it. It's battery is not even low yet.

Stocking on these security dongles are a very bad idea They are not a bad idea. Yes, they have a limitation, but it's an impossible to avoid limitation. It's no different than replacing the battery in your watch, except there's no way to reset it to the exact timestamp from when it was manufactured. The security token does improve security, and normally needing to replace it once every few years (and having plenty of warning that it's dying so you can remove it from the account) is a very, very small price to pay.

When you factor in shipping and the token itself, SE is really not exactly raking money in with them. It is a genuine security tool offered to help protect the consumer who fears his account might be in danger of compromise.

u think a battery cover or a way to change them would have been an easy solution for their devoted patrons. You could take it apart and replace the batter if you want. But then your one time passwords would always be wrong. You don't seem to understand how the token works.

Just Disable the token before it expires. You will not loose the free storage space you got when you signed up for the token. I disabled my token over 6 months ago, and still have my space. but its full :P

I had a token for 6 month... before i ended up losing it... then found it, then lost it yet again... I decided it was not for me so I disabled the little ball of joy and still have wondeful days of playing ffxi ahead of me w/o it. One less over dramatic person in ffxi, the better.

Clownroyale,

The article that Zenoxio is quoting from is correct. We do offer a limited 90 day warranty on the SQUARE ENIX Security Token, as generally any problems that would be covered by the warranty (manufacturer’s defects and the like) would occur in that timeframe.

Unfortunately we are not offering any sort of replacement or exchange program for situations occurring outside of that warranty period. So you would need to purchase a replacement SQUARE ENIX Security Token, either through the PlayOnline Viewer or the SQUARE ENIX Account Management System.

If you need assistance making that purchase, please contact us directly through the SQUARE ENIX Support Center.

The SQUARE ENIX Support Center can be found at this link:
SQUARE ENIX Support Center (http://support.na.square-enix.com/main.php?id=20&la=1)

I dunno whats the big deal on this,if the battery dies after 6 years(or more) using.u see battery on my Phone last like 1 year and cost more then the tokken,so if my battery on tokken dies after 6 years i gladly buy another

Your phone uses a rechargable battery, the token does not. The two are not comparable.

What phone has a rechargeable battery that konks out after 1 year?

Anyway, you have to disable the token on your account regardless of if you're getting a new one or not to continue being able to log in, so why not just go without a token if $10 is too much for you?

It never ceases to amaze me that anyone would expect an electronic device that they own would last for ever. Nor that anyone would expect someone else to be responsible for the replacement cost. You knew when you purchased the security token that you would have to purchase replacement. Or at least you would have if you'd read what the screen before clicking the "I agree" button.

You mean nothing electronic lasts forever? Haha

For another $10 that's nothing. Just dont go to McDonalds that week.
