Anyone else annoyed with the light switch that is the transition from day to night?
DARKNESS!!

LIGHT!!
Just an idea of something that can be changed to be a little more realistic rather than the light switch day night cycle we have now.

Lol. Yes, i remember every game from nearly a decade ago and back that had instantaneous night/day moments. This is one of them. Am I annoyed? No, not really (I find it funnier more so than I find it irritating, it's also a great daily reminder of gaming history). Could it be fixed? I'm not really sure.

Assuming that the DATs for the sky/weather patterns are used over and over in each zone, I don't see why not.
I also thought it was a bit funny, but not too big an issue. I still think XI has great graphics for a PS2 game that's so huge. Unique original zones are what set good MMO's apart from the bad ones.

If it actually used DX properly, it could probly be done easily. It doesn't even do ambient light worth a flip. If they ever get around to fixing the API issues, maybe they could fix the lighting as well.

While they were at it, i would like it if they made the nights darker too. Not so dark that you can't see what's going on, but a bit more than it currently is.

Um, I see the light move across a zone all the time. Its especially noticeable in Valkurm Dunes. As 6:00 ticks on the clock the sun literally spreads across the land. Its even dynamic enough that the far western side actually sees sun first as it crests over the mountain ridge to the east. Sure, its fast, but it still does sweep across the land.

I don't play on Xbox so often these days (mostly PC now), but the day/night effect is very gradual on the Xbox 360 version.

I don't see what the OP is talking about. The lighting transition seems fine to me. I'm also against making nights darker.
I'd prefer it if SE didn't mess with anything like this until much later, at the absolute least. Because I have a lot of things in FFXI I'd like to see done before something like this were even considered in a dev meeting. xD

While it does fade gradually at certain parts of the day, at a certain point someone suddenly hits the light switch. Never really paid attention to just when it happens, but it's pretty obvious in certain zones. Teriggan comes to mind (guess because of the glare on the beach). But it is very poorly implemented in general, just may not notice it so bad in some zones because of the zone's color pallette and ambient lighting in general is just kinda "meh".

And then there's places like Zi'tah that never gets sun :P
Honestly, though, I haven't noticed dawn or dusk to be jarring, especially concidering 1 earth hour ~= 1 game day
