Unmasking a Goblin?! Just what do they look like??

As if to taunt us over the years with the concept that they in fact can lose their mask from being toppled by us Adventurers after a battle (ex: You've found a Goblins Mask), after looking at one of the winning entries of the 9th Anniversary Art contest, looking at the Goblin within the piece sparked the thought... just what do Goblins look like under that mask?! lol

I took a stab at fabricating what I think they may look like, ^^; but I'm just guessing here.

Would it be impossible to get an official FFXI illustration of what one of our oldest enemies actually look like under that mask? I mean we get to see what Orcs look like masked and unmasked... unfortunately lol.

There should be an NM that at some point, the face mask breaks or falls off. Even if he didn't drop anything, I think people would still fight him just to see what his face looks like.

I could understand the built in eye protection if their eyes were sensitive to light and such (being underworld dwellers and all), but unless they had ultra sensitive smell as well (which would warrant a big shnoz lol), what would they be "filtering" out with those mask? Does the above world stink? o.o

The mouthpiece doesn't look as big as the lump on the mask though, so I still think their noses would have to be slightly smaller. Unless the armor wearing gobs are gobs with massive birth defects.

Very Awesome! ^^ Though in concept stages, things can always get altered a bit, like how the Giga in this sketch (http://www.finalfantasyxionline.com/content/images/gallery/concept-art-monsters/Gigas) looks a good bit different from the Giga's in the game (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090726035747/finalfantasy/images/c/cf/Giga_(FFXI).jpg). I think the Goblin in that link you posted would look scary as hell roaming the caves and such! o.o lol With all the fur and clawed feet and whatnot.

concept art is always more detailed, then it is renderred at lower detail to simply save on resources. Damn those $$$

I don't think the goblin concept is what they ran with for the final game. Even taking into account that it is rendered with fewer details in the game, I think the designs are too different.

And it is usually rendered in lower detail for it to be possible to run on end user computers. If all goblins had 100 times the detail of what htey have now, imagine how slow areas filled with hundreds of them would have been on a computer from around the time the game was released.

SE already made high poly versions of the designs you know, for use in pre-rendered cut scenes, so they didnt really save anything on making another low-poly version of them.

They are a development from the earlier pig faced or hound skull bascinets which were shorter, with mail aventail protection for the throat and neck.
