During the 9th Adventurer Appreciation Campaign, the notion of the next year’s 10th anniversary came to mind. What might be in store for such an occasion? Surely more than a new suit or dress and a pouch of gil, right? The Life in Vana’diel story describing the letters of gratitude from prominent characters inspired me. It made me realize that we as adventurers have so far been making our mark solely by conquering challenges conceived by the development team.
Over the years I have made numerous suggestions through official response forms and on forums. On occasion, it seemed as though positive changes had been effected by feedback from myself and other like minded people. Until recently, one could never be sure what the development team was thinking about in regard to our comments, complaints, and compliments.
Now, exactly one year prior to Final Fantasy XI’s 10th anniversary, and here on the official forums, it seems to be the perfect time and place to make this suggestion. I wanted to make sure there would be lots of time for consideration of this idea.
Please allow us, the players, to truly mark our place in Vana’diel’s history. Please consider a series of design submission contests in honor of the 10th anniversary!
The current fan art contest is all well and good for those with talents in the visual arts, and I say more power to those fans. However, I would hope there is a place for those of us with other talents to express our passion for making Vana’diel an exciting and vibrant place.
For examples, how about a notorious monster design contest? Choose its name, type, unique behaviors, spawn area, its treasure and a victory title! How about a quest design contest? Breathe some life into obscure NPCs or expand upon a favorite line of existing quests! Perhaps an equipment design contest, or a job ability, job trait or magic spell contest? Practically any facet of the game’s design could be made into a contest.
Of course, any contest worth holding needs a prize worth winning. In this case, what better prize -- what better way to make our mark on Vana’diel -- than to have the best ideas implemented into the game itself?
I realize that the development team has content in the works to cover updates for the remainder of the year and beyond. Still, I can’t help but wonder what might be possible should the players’ imaginations and visions for Vana’diel’s future be allowed to supplement the developers’.
