Given all the threads so far have been about do's and don't's of the various download services, I was perplexed as to why noone's brought up a hard copy release? My connection precludes me from downloading such a massive file in a timely manner of any kind. Is there a way for me to get an actual hard copy of the collection?
To my knowledge there isn't. The most up to date, CD tangible FFXI collection is the Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection But that is everything but abyssea.
Might be a while before we see that on CD/DVD, the whole thing about DLC is that they don't have to spend money on the marketing and packaging. If you can do updates in general (and you have to to play the game anyway) most of abyssea is probably all ready there. It's not as massive as it would be trying to download a full real expansion pack.

Well, it's not as much the game as it is the bonus content, that Destrier Beret. Though, that said, having the disks makes reinstallation vastly easier. This is why I still have mine and I play mainly on the PS2. All 6 of them. I mean, paying $20 on just a beret that has, literally, no tangible proof of purchase seems a bit much.
Append: I've seen you online. Sent you a couple tells... uh, sorry about that. Knew a Misi on Midgardsormr but now she's impossible to find.
Yeah, be careful if your just trying to get the Beret, There are a few posts of the forums right now about conflicts with existing data. I can't really elaborate on the details since I'm not repurchasing. I'm sure it'll be cleared up soon if it isn't all ready.
Don't worry about the tells. Gotten them pretty often over the last year. I'm a long time XI player and Misi just happens to be my real name. Was never good at naming characters in MMOs.
