What do you guys think? Should this be changed? Just my opinion.
I think this is very unfair. I believe it makes people become very selfish during the fight and not do anything because they're scared to get hate and die before the NM is dead while the ones doing the work, especially the tank, who gets KO'ed right before the NM is dead, misses out on the ATMA.

Probably yes. Considering you can get items without problems if you're dead while the mob is killed, it only make sense that you should also get key items.

i wouldn't mind all key items being granted while dead, would make the melee's and mage's life less stressful.

It sad that people are trying to squeeze every ounce of challenge out of this game.

While that actually does, in some way, pose a challenge, it's a pointless one. Holding mobs is easier than killing them, just back tank and wait for people to raise, just takes a while. On the other hand, it can be really unfair. I went Atma/Abyssite hunting with my LS the other day, got all the Atma/Abyssite in the zone, except Cuelebre. Not because we didn't get the Atma, but because I was doing 90% of the work on my WAR, since we didn't have any other DDs, or at least didn't wanna risk them. I even held it for five minutes with DRG/WHM healing us, for people to get up and stop dying, then it 2hr'd I jumped in and died to a completely unresisted Bai Wing the second the DRG killed it. So I ended up doing almost all the work myself and didn't get the Atma as the only one.
And the fact that many mobs can one-shot people with an AoE attack the second before it dies doesn't help either. Especially when those mobs aren't even your own (looking at you, VNMs... although that's an entirely new issue in itself). Sure, everyone who needs it could just stand far back, but as I said, I think that's a pointless challenge. It doesn't make the game any harder, it doesn't make it any harder to kill mobs, just takes longer and can be annoying when it doesn't work.
That's all disregarding the fact that it doesn't make sense. After all, you get normal items too, key items aren't anything special, they're just items that don't clog up inventory space, that's the whole point of them. And you even get titles for killing NMs when dead. Why are key items the only exception? It's simply a matter of conveniece, I'm all for challenge, but challenge should consist of actually challenging content, not minor annoyances. It's just like people arguing that having no map is a challenge, or that teleports take away from the challenge, it's just not true.

I've lost a few atmas this way, it teaches you to not be stupid when the mob is near dead.

While some people are ignorant, I have to say, I agree with what your saying Arcon. It makes perfectly sense how you should still be able to get key items even if you die. Specially the fact that if your the one having to do most of the hard work durring the fights. challenge should consist of actually challenging content, not minor annoyances.
The game should be Fun and challenging not annoying.

Next thing you know someone is going to post a complaint about how retarded the concept of dying is in a game where you can just get raised again. "Why not just make everyone invulnerable from everything?" etc.

ignorance some ppl are.
minor annoyance does not make the challenge. The content does. And just because ppl see it this way, doesnt mean we want to be invulnerable, and it certainly doesnt mean we will complain about dying either.
Some things, SE needs to learn, based on thier mistakes. somethings we need to learn, based on our skills. This forum site was made for both parties to learn from each others mistake to help and create the balance this game needs based on gamers point of view and the developers point of view.
