FFxi freezes my laptop

I play ffxi, and it hard locks my system, and I hear the music looping. I have to power down my system, and power it on. Everything else works fine on my laptop. FF14 runs well. FFXI is the only game that locks up my system. Here are my specs
core i7 1.7 gig
6 gig ddr3 ram
5870 M

I have the newest drivers for all of my hardware, and I don't have any background apps running. Thank you.

Those systems with the 5870 solutions have a high pwer consumption under load--could be something going on with the cooling solution. While the GPU may not be getting much of a workout under FFXI, the CPU and RAM are. Might be worth looking into some monitoring software (speedfan or something of the like) to see if anything spikes before it hangs up.

Also, the latest drivers aren't always the best for FFXI--there could be some glitch in them (drivers from 2009 are still best forr FFXI on my card, even though more recent ones are better for other things). So it might be worth stripping the drivers and going back to the earliest ones you can install and test different releases to strike a good balance.

Edit:might be worth running memtest86 and prime95 for a while to see if there are any issues flagged there as well--could simple be a bad cell in RAM.
