I read some stuff that said that Abyssea has killed SMN, but I find that to be untrue.
For one thing, having a good BP- recast set can really help with procing Pearl lights, and thats with the right atmas (Beyond, Minkin, and Ultimate) to do above 4k damage with Heavenly Strike. Also having -perp gear for keeping avatars out (with the extent of minkin and getting at least 70% of that atma's refresh back) plus having Caller's Pendant can really help with damage, even if you never use assault.
I understand that most people only want jobs that can proc red/blue/yellow on NMs, but for pure damage with no risk, you can't go wrong with SMN. Avatars can bloodtank better than most PLDs out there, and as long as you have 2 or more SMNs well geared trading hate, you can lowman most NMs, as long as you have the "proc" jobs to cover your "needs" of certain items/key items.
Stop killing off jobs in Abyssea, you can find that most jobs are still just as good, if not better, than the bandwagon jobs that have arisen with Abyssea.

You missed the physical damage build, great for farming/exp, or physical damage reduction build which is great for soloing/lowmanning. No, you wont join a MNK and WHM team, but you will join a RDM and BST. Some jobs just work better together than others.

Still don't think it would hurt or be game breaking to do the things I mention in another thread. I have the -15 second BP recast timer. Really easy to get now-a-days anyway. I'd just like for my summoner to have something useful to do farming emp weapons. Only get to use it for soloing and exp/cruor farming in Abyssea. I know I'd be allowed to go summoner a lot more if those changes were made.

Summoner is not dead in abyssea....its still a very potent job, people just need to figure out how useful smn really is beyond Odin in exp parties
I do wish we could do more than pearl lights, and have the bps as possible procs so my aby ls would let me come as smn more often instead of situationaly
smn is probably one of the more versatile jobs in the game, simply because of the different avatars...wish people would see that
I have found smn more powerful in abyssea than ever before. Atma is the first taste we have ever had at being able to buff our avatars and they are very strong with the right combinations. Smn has also got more equipment in the last year than I think they ever got before. (I don't think I'm exaggerating here. The job's applicable equipment probably more than doubled)
The only bad part is that we cannot really help weakness triggering except to sub whm and use staff for blue weakness. Smn falls in the same category as pup and cor in abyssea, It's a strong job that people don't NEED to have.

SMN in Abyssea is exactly what it was in previous endgame. A Hate-free DD. With a Crit Atma build, you can put out 4k+ consistant Predator Claws, and 4k+ Group 2 merits with the appropriate MAB build. With the Empyrean Set +2, you'll put out the odd 10k+ Blood Pact, which is still hate free. As far as support DD goes, it's very effective.

I don't know what you mentioned, but I think the BP timers still need to be split up more. We got so many debuff pacts that we are basically RDM, but with a such bad global timer system that we are effectively as good as a WAR at debuffing. It is funny how a RDM would be quick to complain if their paralyze/slow/haste etc were so useless all they could do were melee with swords, but a SMN do not complain when all they can do is predator claws over and over.
Probably some kind of big numbers syndrome. Meaning a RDM would be fine if all their spells were useless, if they had a WS doing high damage.

Pulling 6k Heavenly strikes on mobs not resistant to magic. Dead job, etc

SMN are not dead at all, in fact low manning zone bosses etc. the SMN does most the dmg. Example Sedna. Who else can take him out w/o healers.
You forgot to mention that the spirit pact can proc yellow. I have done this numerous times w/o a BLM in a party. Wish SE would let the spirits do aga spells.

Not useful in a minimalist set up, but if you're bringing extra people for w/e reason, smn is on the list of jobs I wouldn't mind bringing in as an extra.

Summoner is not dead AT ALL in Abyssea. There are so many events where they shine very bright when it comes to fighting endgame mobs, the type where you need at least 4-8 summoners to kite the mob while melees got wiped and your healers are busy raising people. It's still one of the best job out there given the right atmas.

Regarding SMN triggering weaknesses Malamasala brought up a good point in another thread that smn can use spirits to hit yellow !! though of course spirits are about as reliable at casting useful spells as dingos are reliable at babysitting.
