Sell gil officially, don't even need to add a proper system. Can just add gold mog pell, pay money = send a mog pell, sell mog pell to npc = 10 million gil.
There is no resistance at all in farming the gil, they can create as much as they want. RMT have to spend money to farm the gil, RMT cannot compete.
There is no banning fear, it's official.
The gil sold supports the game and new content. It would probably double or more the profitability of the game overnight.
Gil is being bought anyway.
WoW did this, people complained and then accepted it.
Serious players don't care, it's already easy to farm your own gil.

I would suggest something of a system if they do.
Most of our Relic, Mythic, and Empyrean currencies are either obtained in ambuscade or are farmed by RMT. As such to ensure RMT don't simply change which currency they sell, get ahead of their next move.
use the Coin Mog Pell, get a unique currency.
use said unique currency at an NPC to obtain gil, dynamis crafting materials (sparkling stone), 10,000 Byne Bill, Ranperre Goldpiece, Rimilala Stipeshell, Bayld Crystal, Dense Cluster, Cat's Eye, W. Areuhat, Balrahn's Eyepatch, Beastmen's Medal, Kindred's Medal, Demon's Medal, Murky Astral Detritus, etc at varying quantities of said unique currency.

It won't get rid of RMT, it will just limit the price they can charge. And they're probably already charging less than SE would.

Gil having high value to resell is actually very dangerous for a game of this age, reducing the resale value of gil is a good thing to do.
The company selling currency will completely decimate the 3rd party market and turn it into a service industry, make the game safer by devaluing the crypto currency aspect, allow casual players to make progress if they have less time, make patches less of a headache cause all these people are not poking everything to try get some money out of any bug and greatly increase profitability.
I would even argue most players want them to do this, it's mostly teenage audiences from 10-20 years ago that were opposed to this kind of thing, cause they didn't have any money and so it was unfair to them.

The players don't care. Apathy set in. The time to do something about it was 2006.

It is ugly, and I'd never buy even if official, but I agree that it might be a good thing to do.
Seen some other games do it, too, and while I still don't like it... maybe it was for the better.
Can't really see SqEX doing something like this though.

It's never too late before it's too late. :]
