A lot of XI players like to have multiple accounts, part of the reason some enjoy it (at least why I enjoy it) is because it in effect hearkens back to older FF games where you controlled a group.
When you played FF7, you were Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, Barret, Cid, Red etc
You built a team, you geared them and they were part of your troupe. You didn't just feel rewarded and happy when you got some new gear for Cloud, you also felt it when you for something new for the others.
Many players on XI have a similar mindset, they like to have the different characters and they enjoy gearing them up and using them. There are some people who do it who are purely min maxing and don't really value the extra characters aside from HQ trusts, but for me and many others they are in effect extensions of my main character and I get the same enjoyment getting a new REMA or piece of gear for my alt as my main.
Some may say it's bad because it can isolate you from the community, but this is ultimately a Final Fantasy game and how you play and see it is impacted by past games. I never enjoyed using alts on other mmorpgs, I only like it on here and to be honest I'm not sure I would still be playing if not for my other characters. The importance and ability to have and want alts is a part of the many unique systems of this game.
They in effect take the psychological reward systems the game has, and times it by 6. If I log in and have nothing I want to do on main, I always have something I wanna work on for one of my other characters and so it keeps people invested who have a very hard time staying invested in this or other games.
