View Full Version : A Legacy for Vana’diel: A Proposal for Character Preservation Beyond FFXI’s Lifetime

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XI since shortly after the NA release of Rise of the Zilart on the Unicorn server now Fenrir — over twenty years ago now. My main character has lived in Vana’diel longer than many real‑world friendships and jobs. I have 839 days of playtime with my main character across two accounts and five characters, and even though I can only log in a few days a month now, I continue to subscribe because keeping my characters alive feels like keeping Vana’diel alive.

I know I’m not alone. Many long‑time players feel the same way: our characters aren’t just save files. They’re living records of our time, our memories, our accomplishments, and our connection to a world that shaped us.

This is why I want to propose something I believe would mean a great deal to the community:

A Character Legacy Program
A way for our characters to continue to exist even if FFXI is ever shut down, sunset, or rebooted in another form. Some ideas for what this could look like:

1. A downloadable “character archive”
A secure, offline file — like a cold wallet — containing:

Character appearance

Job levels

Mission progress

Titles

Playtime

Achievements

Equipment list

Trusts unlocked

Nation allegiance

Something we could keep forever, even if the servers go dark.

2. A physical collectible version
Square Enix could offer a premium product — maybe shaped like your nation’s crest (San d’Oria, Bastok, Windurst) — containing your character archive on an SSD or encrypted USB.

A real‑world artifact of your time in Vana’diel.

3. A “Legacy Transfer” option
If FFXI is ever rebooted or reimagined — whether as a new MMO, a single‑player experience, or even integration into FFXIV — allow our archived characters to be reborn in some form:

Appearance

Name

Nation

Titles

A commemorative badge showing their FFXI origin

Not a gameplay advantage — just a way to carry our identity forward.

4. A memorial mode
If full transfer isn’t possible, allow archived characters to be viewed in a museum‑style interface:

Walk around a virtual Mog House

View your gear on mannequins

Read your mission history

See your playtime

Listen to your favorite zone music

A way to visit your character even after the game is gone.

Just keep the game running, nobody wants any of that.

This post feels like you're already writing the funeral eulogy for the game, I'd rather focus on simply keeping the game going rather than spending time on something like this.

I think there's good ideas in this list so I don't want to discredit it entirely. But it feels so saddening to think of a world without Vana'diel, lol. We still have 5+ years of FF11 to look forward to! And I'm sure many more after that.

I like everyone's optimism. I guess I miss having time to play the game. When I log on now, I just walk around for a little bit and look around do a few quests. Sometimes I pop random low-level NM's that likely haven't been popped in a very long time and I don't kill them. Then I watch them de-spawn for what could be the last time. Sometimes I go deep in a random dungeon and kill an insignificant mob just to say, "Hey your worth it back here! Keep up the good work!"

It shouldn't be too difficult to make an offline version to sell, if the game ever goes offline. :]

I think they have commented on that before, though, saying that some things are just impossible to do in such a setting.

Well, I don't think that should be any real obstacle, considering the amounts of money they'd probably be able to make by selling it.

They could just make small tweaks here and/or there, or not.

Could even make it peer-to-peer/LAN so people can play with friends still, without a central server!

I'm sure there are some funny legal issues that might prevent that sort of stuff, however... and it would cost too much to get over /that/ obstacle.

I'm not sure I'd want anything less than that. I do have thousands of screenshots I can go through already, and think those already suffice for me, aside from something actually playable.

(I plan to eventually make a playable replica of sorts of my own when I find the energy and/or time for it... mostly the energy at this time.)

Making an offline version is very difficult and they have already stated that if they were to do it (they probably would never do so), it would be a total redesign of the game.

It shouldn't be too difficult to make an offline version to sell, if the game ever goes offline. :]Actually, they explicitly said that it would be very difficult. PlayOnline is very heavily intertwined with the game client (the game code itself is a .DLL file called by the PlayOnline software, rather than an independent executable) and they can't just flip a switch and make it work offline. They'd have to implement a system for people to download their data, there's a lot of things they'd have to do to make that happen. As the poster above said, basically if they were to do any sort of offline experience, it would be basically a remake that follows the original story.

Yup, I said all I said knowing this.

And I also know something about them codes.

Nothing is impossible, and I know you, also, know this. :]

It can be done!

They could even out.source it to the community; that is, open-souce things, but then we get to the copgregeghaghnkf

Of course nothing's impossible, but any such work requires investment and staff and creating something new purely for the planned future death of the game is really not something I think they would see as having a good ROI on it, so it would be a really hard sell.

As I said before all of this, the game is doing better than anyone could have predicted and that same investment spent on the game's continuation and improvement would be far more logical.

Yes, the amount of preservation I expect them to do is what they have done with the We Are Vana'diel site.

Think that is what Fujito said somewhere too. Or in any case, it is similar to what he wants to do to preserve things with.

I do know how company logic works, quite unfortunately.

Some people have such simplistic views on the world.
