The content is already soul crushing, please just make these drops 100% from the chests we work to open. This is not asking too much, I know you want to add them to login campaigns but that it's not enough.
This would be a huge QoL change, and make more people happy to do it.

For the highest tier chest they really should be guaranteed with a chance for muliple

The "lucky chest" mechanics for Limbus are terrible, because it punishes players.
In Limbus one of the chests has a higher chance to give matter, and 5k as opposed to 3k (so in effect 3/4 are all unlucky).
This is set per character and does not change when you zone, so in effect this forces players to cycle box floor opening forever. 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4.
So we have to literally write down the box we open and what floor it was on every time per zone, and cycle. If we have mulitple characters this is even more annoying to track. I reallly do not want to have to do this, but I have to do it or you will punish me.
If a player unknowingly just opens a set chest every time on one floor for a year they are severely punished as opposed to other players who know how it works, because they will never once get the lucky chest. It only moves if you open it and if it's on floor 4 and you always open it on floor 1 you will never get it.
This is annoying and unfair to players who don't know this system exists, and just making the game overall more annoying to play.
Things like this make me not want to play the game, it's super unfair and annoying.

if a player doesn't know the system exists, it's on them for not checking the wiki or reading the update notes on this forum.

I reallly do not want to have to do this, but I have to do it or you will punish me.While I suppose the fact that it can be guaranteed every fourth time cuts into this, Not receiving a bonus is not the same thing as "punishment." 3k is the baseline value and 5k is "extra." It's not 5k is the baseline value and 3k is a "punishment."
One could argue that they could just make it 3500 100% of the time to eliminate any feelings of reward or punishment and also eliminate any need to keep track of which chest you opened (since it really shouldn't matter in the first place).

My biggest complaint isn't that they have a lucky chest system, it's that the lucky chest never changes and so if a player gets into a habit of doing east box every time out of habit, they will quite literally never ever get a lucky chest cause the lucky chest is on west.
In any lucky chest system, it should always change under some circumstance to take account for players not knowing how it works and building a habit around which to open.

I'm actually really stunned that it isn't simply random every time you open the chests. I didn't know this and probably would have acted exactly as you described had i the time to full clear frequently enough.

The way the system is setup, it fools you into doing this.
If I farm all floors in order and the final floor (central) has a chest I will always open the chest on central, cause I'm there.
With the lucky chest system, I am punished as a player doing the content for this cause if the lucky chest this time is east I will never never get it in a million years.
The only saving grace to this, is the free ??? which guides you to open on whatever floor it was found on.

By now it has been some ages since I did Limbus at all, but I do remember seeing some of us get 3000 and some of us get 5000 when I had thought it would be the same for us all, after first noticing I got 5000 once, or something like that.
Definitely was /not/ guessing that it never changes until one opens it.
I suppose /that/ is the point of having a chest in each area, which I was always wondering about (sure, could switch the order for of doing for some reason, but that would just mean more menu-doing, so maybe not worth the effort).
I don't think I'm a fan of the plan.
That written, if the ??? acts as a guide, wouldn't that mean that the box /does/ change, since the ??? is in the same place for everyone?
Or does it only change if not opened yet... hrm.
