View Full Version : Randomly giving away free rewards devalues everyone's effort

So I know I'm about 20 years late to this argument, but please explain the philosophy behind giving away free things to players at random.

When you give away free things to players randomly, it devalues the effort and accomplishment of players who had to obtain the thing through the otherwise required process.
Based on very simple effort to reward ratio calculations, this incentivizes players to NOT play... why would you spend a few hours farming gil when you can just wait a week and get that same amount of gil for free essentially.

When you give away free gil, it just devalues the gil and efforts of all those who made gil up to that point or will make gil after that point. All it does is cause hyper-inflation and devalues people's effort and de-incentivizes
players from farming it...

Just what is the positive side of a process where a small % of people are randomly given major free rewards?

So a huge % of people have their time wasted and hopes gotten up that they could receive this awesome reward, but then dont... and a small % of people
get a free reward that they didn't do anything to earn that devalues the effort of everyone else who did not get lucky enough to receive the reward...

Just why is this done exactly...?

In real life, lotteries are universally accepted to be essentially scams that prey on people who don't understand very basic mathematics to generate
revenue for governments or other causes, but I'm just analyzing this from a players perspective of this virtual world and giving away virtual rewards.

Of course its also well known that some huge % of people that win the lottery end up blowing it on ridiculously frivolous things and go broke within a few
years, because people that receive things for which they didn't put in real effort and value to obtain understandably don't have the appreciation of the value
of whatever it is they've been given.

So a bunch of people that did nothing to earn something and likely won't even appreciate receiving it are given a reward, meanwhile the vast majority of
people are just having the value of their effort and gil devalued everytime they don't win something and others do.

If it's about bonanza, specifically, it's about dollar mules and subs. They get money, nothing else matters.

If you mean in general, it's still about subs, they get money, nothing else matters. People who "earn it" are getting treated unfairly, but they'll never do anything but whine about it, so who cares.

A businesses only priority is make money. By any means necessary. If the result has no negative outcome on profit, or the penalty is smaller than the reward. Then do it.

I understand how you feel, but I don't really care what anyone else thinks about my accomplishments. They're still accomplishments for me and that's all that matters. And anyway a few people winning a weapon in a lottery really doesn't alter the REMAP landscape that much. Aside from the primes they've all been around a long time and people have had plenty of time to get them. Relics aren't really even rare anymore even without the giveaways.

Just ignore Urioh, he's like the most jaded person in the entire community. It's not that deep, it has nothing to do with subs or money, I'm sure not making a bunch of alts just for a better chance at a prize, I don't even usually buy any balls, I just don't care.

It WOULD be about getting more subs IF SE actually ran it outside of Free Login campaign. Almost every time it runs, Free Login is also running during the marble purchase period.
As such, just write down which numbers you picked and check the forums/discords to find out what the winning numbers were, re-sub if you won. don't if you didn't.

It definitely has a small effect of pulling gil out of circulation. the 1,126,125 gil crafting materials do that far better though.

Almost no one ever picks gil. Just isn't worth it when you could get things not available anywhere else instead.
Or you could get an Ultra Rare item like Crepuscular Cloak, Null Masque, etc.

I don't like that there are items only available from the lottery, but it is what it is.

Er what gil are you talking about, raw gil has not been an option from bonanza for some time. Only items which can be sold for gil, server price depending.

They do this in a manner that would require someone who is tempted to purchase marbles to pay with a sub to collect the prizes. They win.

Jeez guys, its supposed to just be a fun thing and offer the thrill of winning cool prizes, if you want to be total party poopers they can just not do the mog bonanza anymore and you can ruin it for everyone...

So far, since 2005, I've only won "big" twice. And by big I mean rank 2 which both happened within the last 5 years I think.

Most recent win was this last bonanza actually, where I forgot to buy the pearls in time for all my characters... but still won the rank 2 on my oldest one, which is fun.

The prize selection... isn't really that amazing. Even the rank ones don't really wow me, and I don't see how they really devalue anything. Not so many people get these either.

I picked the Cat's Eye this time, just to have it. :]

Last time I got rank two, it was not a character I do much with, so I picked something I could send or/and trade.

I got a 10k Dynamis currency item, and gave it to a friend, which made them quite happy indeed.

I think that was fun.

I do not think that it is fun that there are bonanza-exclusive items, because gotta collect 'em all and all that, but other than that, I'm largely indifferent on the event, and often did not bother to remember to waste my inventory space on it, though at least it's only -2 nowadays!

Remember when it was -10!?

(Why not 11? FFXI really lacks 11 in so many things they could is it in, and I think I'll go ramble in a different thread... for now!)
