Do you have dgvoodoo installed? Also the "4 gb patch" may help. I used to have the same issue. I haven't had it happen since installing both of these.

If you can re-produce the issue consistently, I would file it as a bug report, though it might be not helpful in the end due to how they handle such things here.
Could also do it via a support request via the support site, but they might just tell you to come back here.
For a real solution, I would recommend installing Linux. :]
Yes, it's fully un-supported by SqEX, but I imagine it will work better for FFXI than actual Windows does the more we move to the future (true for so many older Windows-only games already).

If you want official help, you should file a support ticket on the support site, or post in the Technical Support section of the forum.

dgvoodoo doesn't modify the game in any way. It modifies DirectX.

Like I said , I used to have the exact same issue so I searched online and these are the recommended fixes. The problem is running old games on Windows 11. So if you want to wait for Square enix to somehow fix Windows 11 go ahead. "google can be your friend.
"dgVoodoo 2 is a graphics wrapper that converts old graphics APIs to Direct3D 11 or Direct3D 12 (as of version 2.7) for use on Windows 7 or newer. The wrapper fixes many compatibility and rendering issues when running old games on modern systems"
NTCore 4gb patch... This very little tool patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms. This tool comes very handy for applications which need a great amount of virtual memory like games

FFXI runs just fine on windows 11 without any API wrapper. The only graphical issues I've seen are the same ones that have been in the game on Windows since the game came out.
A memory patch isn't really necessary either unless you're using a hi res texture pack.
There are some legacy components that are no longer installed with windows 11 by default that you may need to enable in some cases to get the game to work properly, but it will once you enable them.

I am a Linux player so I must leverage dgVoodoo and DXVK to play. It does not interfere with gameplay or give any benefits, and my account has not been affected after many many years. So I reckon it's quite safe, but good on you for being wary =)

Is that because of using a virtual machine or so?
Using Wine on Linux is enough without either of those.

No, but it improves performance a lot. You're right though, "must" was the wrong word of me to use, but it really helps a lot.
DXVK is a far more efficient translation layer than the one built into Wine, and has Direct3D 8 support nowadays.
However, in certain configurations.. dgVoodoo2 is required to prevent crashes. So dgVoodoo2 handles the Direct3D 8 to 11 translation, and DXVK handles the DX11 to Vulkan translation.
I haven't actually tried running without dgVoodoo2 lately, maybe D8VK can handle the game alone on my machine now, I'll have to test when I get the chance =)
Edit: Originally I said "running with dgVoodoo2 lately", I meant withOUT. My bad!

Mmh, last I checked, DXVK did not do 8, though there at least was a different project for that, and well, then I suppose the voodoo use could have been used betwixt, but I never did try that.
It /does/ seem dxvk does do 8 now, though, so might look into that at some point though don't really feel the need with a Ryzen 9 7950X, but it will be interesting (and I've not had crashes aside from when there's a Wine bug in the loose, which I then tend to track down pretty quick-like... but I digress!).
Thanks for pointing that out!
