View Full Version : Camera improvements

For a long time, I've wished it was possible to move the in-game camera faster.
It feels very slow to look around nowadays, especially compared to more modern games.
I think people are used to being able to move in-game cameras much faster now without feeling motion sick.

I also wish it was possible to zoom out further.
Depending on how far someone zooms out though, I know this would probably cause issues where players could see unintended parts of a map, where there might not be any textures or level geometry at all.
Still, I would be willing to overlook spots of empty geometry or artifacts if I could zoom out just a bit further sometimes.

Regarding the zoom function, I understand that it simply changes the field of view (FOV) instead of actually moving the camera entity.
It'd be nice to be able to zoom in & out without having to adjust the FOV, as narrow FOV can cause eye strain and motion sickness.

I know this is a lot of work, and if all of what I just mentioned was to be implemented, it'd probably require a major rewrite of the entire camera system..
So, at the end of the day, just being able to move the camera faster would be a great help alone I think, if the developers have time could they perhaps look into this?

I don't expect anyone at the team to go out of their way to make adjustments to the camera system, but I figured I'd voice my request here anyways. Thank you :o

Improvements to the Camera would be most welcome.

Such as a slider to control the speed of movement. To be able to set it Slower or Faster than it is currently.

When using a Controller, the rate of movement is simply too slow when looking around.

I actually like the movement, in that it has some weight to it, unlike everything else we see these days.

That said, I'd never be opposed to options for changing it.

I also remember them saying they /could/ make it zoom farther out, but only if it didn't cause too many problems... or something along those lines. I'll dig the comment up another time.

As for "seeing unintended parts" and all that, this already happens very easily when moving the camera near a wall... but of course it would a bit too bad if it happened by just zooming out.

Good points Dragoy =)

Any eventual camera speed increases would be completely optional, I think the current speed is a good default and should remain at that, for sure. Options are always nice.

Happy new year by the way.

I would just like camera control with the mouse to work like it does in any other 3D game instead of simply pressing the arrow keys depending on where you move the mouse in relation to where your cursor was when you held down RMB...

That'd ultimately be the best improvement they could make, and honestly somthing I've debated on posting in this forum for some time.
I quite like how the camera works in Final Fantasy 14 which, also like similar MMOs, locks and hides the pointer while moving the camera.

The way mouse and camera behave in Final Fantasy 11 are probably two of my biggest "oh goddess please can they update this" things on my list of... several things that I wish could be modernised FF11.

If they could manage that (click and hold to drag camera), I would be able to play with a mouse and keyboard instead of a controller.
Should the developers ever get around to that, I'd also like to see them improve the hit testing when you try to click on an entity in the game world.
Currently if you click on something, selecting the entity you're trying to click on is unreliable and often requires moving the camera for the game to realise what you want to click on.

I know a lot of my hopes for the game are wishful thinking, like finally replacing D3D8 with something that's fully supported on modern hardware, but it's nice to dream =)
