I jump on here once or twice a day, I hit the "New Posts" button and it seems to me that all I ever read on here are complaints, gripes, whines, and all other sorts of other "downers". I thought it would be nice to have at least one thread on here where we all talk about things we like! We all play this game for one reason or another but what keeps us coming back? So here is a thread to talk about all the fun things we do, fun facts we find, easter eggs (not Easter event eggs :) ), and other things that we find that make us smile. Personally, I find the level of detail in the environments SE has made astounding. Not only so much on the regular things, but on more irregular things. The rainbow in La Thain when some one completes the summoner quest, the glowing rocks in the pillars Buburimu Peninsula at night, the weird types of fish they put in the oceans/lakes, and other stuff like that. It seems like no matter how many times I travel through one place or another, I still find something that makes me go "hey guys, have you noticed this before?" to my ls mates. That is one thing that keeps me coming back. How about you guys and gals?

The waterfall in Misereaux Coast. The sun rising/setting on Puroganno (sp) beach. The music in Oldton. The music for Shadow Lord Fight and Dynamis Xarcabard. The music in Castle Zvahl Bailey Keep. My moogle who always has a smile and a friendly greeting. Curilla, who always makes me smile. Shami, the NPC you store BS/KS with who always calls me a sucker. :) Joachim who calls me "lass".

The cultural references make me laugh sometimes too. Like when you want to tele to a maw and you tell Horst to "Make it so", or the even funnier "Make it no." LOL

I personally enjoy fighting the evil elvaan oppression wherever I go....we tarus rule! beyond that, um...what makes me laugh in game is when I get lost in retarded zones like saruta because I'm so short I can't see over the grass so I completely get turned around (yes, that has happened on multiple occasions lol) I like the fireworks, especially the goblin with a parachute or the santa one, and my favorite is the one that spells congratulations in the air :) I got married on a previous character a few years ago...that was a great thing too :)

To be fair, the "Other" subforum can't be expected to get tons of traffic. I enjoy a lot about the game where it is now, both in and outside of Abyssea. Sure, it was fun back in the day when we needed an 18+ roster for some events and NMs were still "hard". But I most certainly don't miss the absolute hell that came along with running a big linkshell.
When you have 15-30 people together 4-5 nights a week, there are always going to be personality conflicts and clashes. Someone is going to do something that pisses someone else off. People are going to grate on each others nerves. Even the most chill of people will snap from time to time. It was a very high stress environment, especially for leadership.
Now, content is at the point where everything can be lowmanned and people are better able to just relax and goof off without worrying about wiping or screwing over the rest of the group. Dynamis has become drinking game material. Einherjar can be cleared FFA while linking the whole zone on the first pull. Sea and Sky are mostly obsolete, so now no one has to go to those horrible, horrible zones ever again.
More than anything, I like that I'm able to just kick back, have fun with a couple friends, and still complete armor/weapons.

Another negative post. How sad when the OP wanted to make it something fun.
I still love going to Blue Blade Fell. or sitting in the Tavnazian Safehold to listen to the music and thunderstorms.

Personally, I play with the game music muted, and the effects turned way down for the most part. I've even replaced the sound files for my bard songs (It rocks to have Layla but out every time I use a harp). However, Riding the boat in Carpenter's Landing in any weather; Prommy, period, the deserts at night (when looking towards the horizons); the view from the pinacle in Skyreach; the rare whale sightings on the boats to WG/Mhaura, WG/Nashmau, the end CS to ASA where the Shantotos battle like the Stapuft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters; all the AF cutscenes for pup are epic; from the storyline mission the CS of the expedition to the northlands are a tearjerker, but extremely well done; the CS with Aldo and his sister, all of them can grab you.
There is alot of beautiful scenery (although seasons would be nice), alot of good storytelling and even good laughs in the game, if you just take the time to enjoy it. Heck, any of you been to a wedding at the Bastok Lighthouse?

Did... Did you even read my post? I most definitely do appreciate the current state of the game. My only negative notes were about blatantly negative aspects of "Old" FFXI.

Why doesn't my game look that good :(.
Why doesn't my game look that good :(.
I took a lot of screen shots before I got one I liked, then cleaned it up a bit in photoshop. otherwise it would be a little fuzzy.

Have you used regedit to increase the background resolution?
go to the start button> run > type in regedit
Depending on what operating system you're using you will find the playonline folder in a different place, if you cant find, try a google search or ask here.
But what you are looking for is the final fantasy XI tab, then you want to find 003 and 004, double click those, and change the numbers to 800.
This will set your background resolution to 2048x2048, which is the biggest FFXI will do, and twice what you can set it to through the games interface for some reason. if it lags you to much after doing this, try 600x600. If your PC is really old, I do not recommend doing this. And even with a new/very good PC, you will probably lag a bit by confluxes and teleports!
ONTOPIC:
My favorite random background thing is the dragon that flys over the lake in miseareax coast.

Already done, but to get a graphical quality at the level of that "screenshot", there's a lot more than the resolution and pretend-antialiasing that would need to be improved.
Regardless, it's not strange that it looks better when the poster admitted to using photoshop to touch it up. Good job btw.

I like finding weird little glitchy things like the ground flowers that are floating in the air in a couple spots in Konschtat. Then there's all the environmental changes, like the grapes that grow and ripen over the in-game year out in Rolanberry Fields.

One of the things that still cracks me up is the body piles SE leaves when your party dies in a BCNM and you time out. Something about all those dead people laying on top of each other makes me giggle.

And the piles of bodies in Xarcarbard after a failed Dynamis DL run......back in the day that is, you know level 75. Anyone remember level 75?
Oooh! Another thing I love, the music in Dynamis Xarcabard, I would spend the rest of my life in there just for that. :)

Ok, so I am in the middle of the mini-quest for the gil bag, and I get to the Crafter Moogle in South Sandy. What I read makes me laugh. He sings "I like smooth hides and I cannot lie, You other moogles can't deny". Amazing! XD

Nostalgia time to make me smile because I am saddened about the quality of this game, the new b(g)reed of players and almost ready to hang up my FFXI hat.
I remember landing in Sandy as a new player. Chose Warrior as my first job. New player RSE, Omg! Shmexy! My 2 dear real life friends got me into it, gave me a maple table for my MH and an Amaryllis to do the quest for MH exit to all Sandy Zones. Got invited to their shell, the leader gave me 50k ( I only had 10 gil lol) and told me not to use a sword and shield, EVER on WAR. :)
At level 20, off I went to Jeuno to get my Chocobo license. Gyashi greens were 4k PER clump. That meant forking out 16k and honestly, I was broke, but did buy the first one to start feeding. A lovely LS member went out to Meriph and farmed 3 more clumps in like 10 minutes or less and sent them to me. I was so thrilled and asked what I could do to repay her. Her response was "pay it forward". I promised that I would.
At level 21, I made the mistake of getting lost in Buburimu in the first beach. For the life of me, even with a map, I couldn't see my way out and ran around like an idiot. Again, a kind soul from my LS came and led me out. I was embarrased to say the least, but never forgot the way out again. :)
Level 21 again, me and a friend aggro'd 3 Death wasps in Rolanberry Fields trying to pull Midnight Bats. Never died so fast, but oh how we laughed........!
On to Shadow Lord fight for the first time. Don't remember my level, but was still WAR, two friends took me, said you'll be fine................I had barely touched SL and died.............roars of laughter and I got to watch the coolest CS ever. From then on I have insisted on being present at every SL fight so I can enjoy that CS over.
I have tons of wonderful memories of people long gone from the game, being invited to in-game weddings, falling in love with the wedding GM, fighting that eye NM for the Sleepga II scroll as a level 43 WAR (with my shell) and whiffing, the stupidity of selling said scroll for 1 mil gil, then 4 years later, buying it for 800K. The excitement I felt when Kirin dropped Dryadic Abjuration body and it was my turn to lot, getting Byakko's Haidate and Byakko's Axe, getting all of my MNK relic from Dynamis ( I had changed my main to MNK).
During all of my playing time (5 years, 2 years actual play time), I have kept my promise to pay it forward. The experience of helping others has been incredible. Sadly though, these days, you get asked for/offer help and can barely get a thank you. Everything now is me, me, me, anything left over, me.
I enjoy the new content and found a spark of joy today going into Dynamis by myself. I only killed 5 mobs, 2 Militants, 2 Defenders and I forget what the 5th mob was. (slow on DNC), but I loved it! Argute pants, wootz, and a vial of slime juice were my rewards plus I had a smile on my face. :)
FFXI is the only MMORPG I have ever played, there is no other that even comes close by all accounts, nor will there ever be. I am glad the opportunity was given to me to play by my 2 friends.
Still though, I think it's close to time for me to quit with the good memories intact, and with the few wonderful RL and in-game friends I have and have made. :) It will be and is a very hard decision to make, but I know I am closer to the answer today than I was yesterday.
