That may be it. Automaton attacks dont claim mobs, and I had switched targets to the elemental, which i think would have unclaimed ouryu
This was recently written in a bug report thread.
I'm quite sure this is nonsense? Pets can absolutely claim mobs (for the owner of the pet), and I'm not aware of anything specific to PUP here?

dragons have that unique aspect where they always "fall to ground" and never say "killed by ___".
The fact the dragon was yellow when it actually died simply means claim target swapped back between the time when the dragon's HP hit zero and when it actually died... because dragon.

Pet and owner are treated as one entity for purposes of claiming mobs, iirc. Which means that if you're engaged on one mob and your pet on another, the two cycle back and forth between claimed and unclaimed, depending on who most recently attacked their target.

Yeah. I know you can't claim two mobs but I wanted to be certain I wasn't crazy here, because someone said pets can't claim mobs (they do claim them, for the owner of the pet as you said).

NGL I haven't touched a lot of these fights in a very long time. Is there something else to target in the battle in question that would create this moving claim situation?

yeah, the dragon will spawn elementals whenever he flies. typically you kill the elementals to force him to land.

OK yeah, it looks like I really didn't read it carefully enough, surprise surprise. I was fixated on the first part of the sentence, "automaton attacks dont claim mobs."
By the end of the sentence what they intended to say is more clear, but that first phrase I was stuck on itself is patently untrue, the issue was just the whole one player can't claim two targets thing.
And so yeah, it makes sense, if the wyrm hits 0 HP while you attack the elementals, unless there's someone with you who didn't hit them, you're going to move your claim to the elemental. This is definitely an edge case situation though, as the only DoTs that are probable to cause
If they ever make another fight like this, they should probably just borrow a page from FFXIV and make the mob invulnerable while it is untargetable, which would make it (nearly) impossible for it to die without a claim.
