Idk....seems like a gimme for H2H weapon glamours. Or, hairstyles like Afro, which can fit on any race.

Random? Yeah.....Pretty random thought....but feel they can capitalize on character customization through login rewards. You get ppl to pay, to get exclusive glamours that don't cost much in the way of resources as opposed to new zones, jobs, etc.....

Feel there is a lot they can do with logins.

A cape? lol. Maybe emotes (Use a scroll, gain a new emote)? They can put anything behind logins imo; Exclusive Spells?

The paywall is that you have to sub......That is it......lol. Sure many will, for a chance at something which may entice them.

Monstrosity and login rewards are gold mines imo, that have not been wholly tapped into.

(Feel like a made a thread like this awhile ago....Eh....)

Have you ever really looked at hand-to-hand weapon models? Interestingly, none of them actually go around the hand - just in front of it. Something that surrounds the hand would conflict with hand armor, which is a problem that none of FFXI's programming and modelling staff would have approached before. Can a weapon block an armor slot the way some armor does? For a simple concept, it would be pretty resource-intensive just because it wouldn't be 100% copy-paste work or adapting something that already exists. Honestly, Prishe's Boots is probably at the upper end of what we should expect from a login item, because even that would have involved re-scaling an existing item model and adjusting it to match player animations, since Prishe herself was a non-standard character model.

Emotes are a similar issue - someone needs to make a whole new animation, that's not going to be an easy afternoon of work. New spells... well, that ties into why blue mage doesn't have more spells and why summoner hasn't gotten Bahamut, Phoenix, or Chaos - there have been statements in the past that there just isn't much space for new spells. Some kind of database or indexing thing. It's a bit like how new trusts can't really be added because the available space is already stretched to the point where Matsui-P and Cornelia have to share a slot. It's sad that we can still say it 23 years into the game's life, but... PS2 limitations.

As for capes, wow. I have only lightly dabbled in 3D modelling but the thought is enough to make my skin crawl, that's a whole new object to attach to every player model, in every animation, in a place where it's going to try so hard to cause so many clipping issues. And you just know that people would complain if their cape just hung straight down and crossed into their chocobo's model, or floated in mid-air like the end of Dilbert's tie while they were riding on a spheroid, and it would just look silly to sit on a cape even if that's the most convenient way to resolve sitting animation problems. That would have been a huge ask when FFXI was brand new; at this point in its lifespan, not a chance. That's easily a six-figure task.

Realistically, a new piece of gear a year that doesn't just recolor an existing model, and which follows the normal rules for what's already in game, is probably the most we should be hoping for. It's a bit sad, but small things like that only make current players feel better, they don't attract new ones or bring back old ones, so there's no profit to be had from it. Now, if, say, $200,000 could get a whole new job implemented, that could be enticing enough to bring in added subscriptions, but that's probably an extremely low estimate, and honestly it probably wouldn't bring in more players (who would even know, besides the existing base?) so it would be a huge gamble.

I think you actually hit on the solution to how to implement this: make them hand armor, with "Cannot equip weapons". Since that would automatically force the player into hand-to-hand... (And I suspect that'd be much easier to implement from a code standpoint.)

Make the boxing glove an actual glove, then connect it to the style locking system to hide the equipped weapon while still being able to use it.

I love this idea. I think that they might not be able to make the weapons (gloves) appear around the hands entirely? I dunno. It'd be cool though!

I'm going to venture that there's a reason they haven't made anything like this yet. Not that I wouldn't want it assuming they could do it though, as it would open up more potential design concepts for H2H weapons.
