View Full Version : Can't complete Alter Ego: Valaineral objective

Came back from along time absence to poke around. And I don't seem to have the cipher: valaineral anymore that I received from the previous objective in this line, so I can't complete this objective. I may have accidentally tossed it way back then. What can I do?

Welcome back!
If indeed you have dropped it, you should be able to get a new one via the 'Mystic Retriever' target you can find near the Trust Magic NPCs.

Very much appreciate the fast reply. I just tried speaking with the Mystic Retriever next to the trust NPCs, but all it does is click and no response. I have the "Call forth an alter ego" objective complete, and I can activate the "alter ego: valaineral" objective, but that gets me nowhere. I don't get a cipher nor him added to the list of my summonable trusts so I can summon him and get the cipher and complete the objective. I may be doing something wrong, or I actually buggered up the quest for this. The strange thing is that looking on the guides, I have Joachim, who is supposedly the last trust in that chain of objectives, but I don't have any of the others in that chain, nor am I able to fumble my way to making it work.

It can be obtained again whenever an Alter Ego Extravaganza event occurs, which is rather often. I guess he's in there because some people never do those RoE objecitves.
But before you stress about it, verify that you've actually lost it. Valaineral is literally the first trust you can obtain, as you are directed by the tutorial RoE objectives.
type the command /itemsearch "Cipher: Valaineral" and report the result.

It states "No instances of that item were found." I may have to wait for the Alter Ego Extravaganza unless maybe the game team can help me out. Do they peek into these posts often?

Joachim can also be obtained using Cruor at times, which may or may not explain having that one.
It may seem silly if you don't see it in the list, but just to be sure that you don't already have it, maybe try:
/magic valaineral <me>
As for the game team, I do not think that they peek in here at all, or if they do, they sure are not letting us know. :]
For this Technical Support forum specifically, a moderator may occasionally post basic things to try, or move threads to a different area, which probably will happen in this case eventually as well since this isn't a "technical" issue... technically.
There is the in-game bugs section [1] for in-game issues, but they normally give no feedback at all on those either, though at least the issue will perhaps be looked into.
I might recommend going that route, if you really do not have the cipher nor the magic already, and can not retrieve a new cipher from the retriever.

Using /magic to cast him results in a 'command error occurred.' Works for the rest of the Trusts though, might make a macro for my favs.
Is there a chance a moderator can move this thread there? Or should I make a new thread there as well summing all this up?

It's not really a bug if you tossed it, accidentally or otherwise. You could call a GM and waste your one-time-only item restore on it, but you have other options for tank trusts, so I'd really suggest you just wait for an alter ego event to reobtain it.
It's worth noting that, while it's far too late for you this time, they did add a "recycle bin" feature that allows you to retrieve items you have tossed as long as you think of it right away. The recycle bin is emptied whenever you change areas. So if you accidentally toss an item and realize right away, now you know its possible to reclaim it.

That would confirm that indeed, you have not learned it yet (as long as there are no spelling mistakes).
As a sidey-thought, what exactly does the Trust Magic NPC say to you currently when talking to it?

You would need to create a new thread there, following the instructions in the Welcome to Forum In Game Bugs topic.

I'd consider it a bug if the cipher can not be retrieved from the Mystic Retriever.
At least unless I remember terribly wrong, that is what they are there for, and I have tested it with multiple quest-related ciphers, including these.
I think I have some characters I can test them again, though, to confirm no bad memory.

Okay, I did remember wrong (I am not too surprised). Apologies for that!
These are not quest-related, so the retrievers do not work for them.
Indeed, it would seem like waiting for the specific campaign to return is the intended method to re-obtain these particular ciphers.

(https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/%3F%3F%3F) that is found in many areas with cutscenes. Their purpose is that if you finish a cutscene but have a full inventory preventing you from getting the item rewards, you can later click the retriever to obtain them. "

Well, since it didn't work, that isn't what happened.
Also, I checked both wikis, and on BG wiki, the page states that this only specifically applies to ciphers obtained from the Rhapsodies missions. Valaineral is not obtained in this way.

The trust NPC when spoken to only gives me the defaults like "what's a trust", "where can i find them" etc.. And I saw that new Recycle Bin feature, it's pretty nifty, even came in handy a few times already. Though it would be pretty cool if it worked for a few days rather than a single zone time.
Thanks a lot for the help, guys. Really appreciate it. I will wait for the Trust campaign and hopefully snag my Valaineral then.

Yes, indeed. I already stated I remembered wrong (after having tested it myself), and that these particular ciphers are not included in this feature since they are not quest-related (in the sense that they are obtained in other ways than through a cutscene; others, such as Rainemard, can be re-obtained by re-talking to the NPC the cipher is obtained from).
I think my memory was also telling me that the Trust Magic NPC here handed out these cipher, which is why I was interested in the dialogue, but yeah, that was not how things really went. ^^;
Having written that, I'd say these certainly could or even should be added to the system, since they are required for the Records of Eminence objectives.
