Group and dedicated hardcore players are overwhelming likely to fill out a survey like this, and so will be over-represented in a survey. The number of casual / solo players will be far higher than this questionnaire showed, cause they either don't know the survey existed or don't have time/effort to fill it out.

It showed roughly 45%-53% play solo, this is going to be far higher in reality.

"this is going to be far higher in reality"

Based on what? People who preferred grouping are just as likely to to have not taken the survey. What evidence do you have to the contrary?

And they don't need to be reminded, they conducted the survey and found the results. And if around half of people usually (not always, even the people who say that will group if they really have to) do, then around half of people also don't. In any event, however the data they collected shapes their future plans, nothing is going to happen overnight.

There's a margin of error on any survey. But the numberrs are not likely to deviate a huge amount from this.

I'm not sure what the point of this was. You can do the vast majority of content in the game solo thanks to Trust. And the things that have minimum participation requirements don't just have them to say "heck you solo players."

If you run a fishing shop, and carry out a survey of your customers:

You can have 25 hardcore fishermen, and 75 casual fishermen.

The people who are serious about fishing and are in a club, are going to be more likely to see the survey is behind carried out and tell each other about it. All 25 will fill out the survey, cause they take it serious and all know about it.

People who are not in a club, and only fish for a 4-5 hours at the weekend and come into the shop maybe once a month for bait are less likely to see it and fill it out. Maybe 20-25 see it and fill it out out ofthe 75.

By the survey results it can be seen as being 50/50, when in reality it's not.

Casual players are always going to be far less intertwined with the community around the thing than hardcore and so less likely to see the survey in the first place, it's not advertised in the game or the launcher.

This is not to say the entire game should be like OSRS or something and fully solo orientated, but just that the survey isn't giving an accurate representation as they may think.

Do you really think that SE doesn't understand this? That they'll just take the survey results at face value and not do any kind of deeper analysis?

They understand it, but they don't care about the results regardless. They're going to do what they want to do either way.

And they're going to take a year to get around to it.

By the survey results it can be seen as being 50/50, when in reality it's not.You can't just point to some example you made up and declare "it looks like this but it isn't."

You have no evidence or proof of anything you're claiming. No properly conducted survey has a margin of error so high to make what you suggest even remotely likely. And I don't see any evidence they didn't conduct this survey properly.

No one is suggesting solo players should be ignored or any other group of players should be ignored. But trying to inflate figures to convince SE to do something is not going to work the way you think it will.

Thing is, you haven't given any reason for making these comments in the first place. You haven't raised any issue as to current content that should be changed or ideas for new solo content or anything. All you've done here, is say "There are more solo players than your survey suggests." But you haven't even presented any evidence of that other than some hypothetical situation that is already covered by statistical margin of error. I play solo most of the time myself, but you don't represent me. You are trying to represent a group of people when you shouldn't be. Your opinions are your own and not anyone else's.

Do you really think that SE doesn't understand this? That they'll just take the survey results at face value and not do any kind of deeper analysis?

Thank you. Glad somebody understands how data collection and research works.

You need to keep in mind that saying SE is wrong, this implies the entire company is involved when in reality it's 1-2 people who run XI.

So yes it is entirely possible they will take it purely at face value.

They're a lot of things, but they aren't stupid. You're really selling them short. Everything is done for a reason.
Frankly I think the article itself shows they're looking at things from different angles.

I'm not saying they are stupid, I'm just pointing out something they may not have taking into account. I know the community from the community side, in a way a developer may not.

It's extremely presumptuous of you to speak on this like you know best when SE specifically employs people who both play their games like a player and observe and monitor the community to understand exactly these things. And not just SE but any major game publisher/devleoper. And I can say this with some confidence as someone who has spent some time in the industry.

This is me. I play solo. I don't really talk to anybody. I didn't even know about this survey until I saw this thread.

Yeah, some people play solo, some dont, some multibox, some dont, some people talk, some don't. You can't cater to just one group when several have been involved with your game for decades. You have to consider everybody.

I mostly play solo too. But not always, and like everything else, how much we all play a certain way exist on a spectrum. And none are more important than the others.
