I was wondering if there's a way to delete old linkshells from the game, or at least make their names available again.

Before I get moaned at, I know that it's nice if people come back after a long time and still find their linkshell intact, which, I'm guessing, is the whole point of that exercise. But the same is already happening with character names. If a character is deleted or moves servers, their name becomes available again. I just wish something similar could be done to linkshells as well.

My motivation may be of a personal nature, because something like this happened to me. Six years ago, when I started playing, I wanted to make a LS. But the name was taken. However, I never saw a single person with that LS, ever, not back then and not now. Recently I decided to try and make the LS again, just see what would happen. The name was still taken, as I figured. There's no entry for it in the Linkshell Community site, consequently FFXIAH also never heard of them. It seems like a completely dead LS to me.

Now I'm not saying it couldn't still be used, who knows, maybe some people play in it secretely in their mog house and use it as a social hub. And if they do, good for them. But could there be a way to enable unused linkshells again? Maybe it's just me, but I think if all linkpearls/sacks of a linkshell are on accounts that are inactive/deleted, the LS is effectively dead. Can the LS name then be free to use again?

Good question, but why take a name of a Linkshell that someone has or had in the past. Cant you be original?

I guess that's one way to look at it. In this case it's not to copy off someone else, it's a name that means something to me. It's also a name I've used outside of FFXI and wanted to keep on with the tradition. It's not the end of the world to me (as I said, I came to term with it six years ago, when I started out), but the issue came up again recently, and I was just wondering if there was a possibility to get that name again.

Also, not all Linkshells are registered with FFXIAH or the Linkshell Community. If that has never been done, you won't be able to find the name there. Try adding (like some players do) an I or an X in front of and behind the name to see if that works. Example IInameofshellII

To be fair, I absolutely shut down my ability to take anyone in a linkshell seriously when the name has X's, I's, or |'s around it. XxX||SuPeRcOoLsEpHiRoTh||xXx linkshell will instantly click as retarded.

Yes, and that is just one of the reasons why I don't wanna do that. And I know they don't necessarily have to be registered on the LS Community site, I don't doubt the LS's existance or anything, just saying if it's not up there it may be an indication that the shell is (or the people in it are) inactive.

Another big reason for this is if Leader has quit the game, or as recently happened in one big LS, been banned. If banned it looks like to me that the sackholders could at least be given the option of breaking the LS or establishing a new leader.
The LS is shot but the name is tied up forever and the thing cant be deleted.
SE could send an email to the owner of the name and ask if they wanted to keep it. If no answer they could just delete it.
