Edit:

I don't believe there is likely even a difficult way to save Final Fantasy anymore, let alone an easy way.

I'm not sure if SE even did all of the following, that it could restore the Final Fantasy name for many long gone Final Fantasy fans..

-Perfect remake of FF Tactics that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay.
-Perfect FFXI 75 cap era Remaster that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay.
-Perfect remake of FFXI as it is now with all the content, that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay of the current version of the game.
-Perfect re-release of FFXIV 1.23b servers with a new story where the Warriors of Light save Eorzea and walk into Ishgard as heroes and champions instead of outcasts, that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay of the original 1.23b.
-Perfect re-release of FFVII-Remake that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay of the original game.
-Perfect remaster of Dissidia and 012 re-bundled and re-released that faithfully remains true to both the story and all the gameplay.
-Perfect redirection of FFXIV that makes all races have access to all hairstyles and equipment, a proper expansion that has actual new and exciting content, job adjustments that cater to both experts and new players (totally 100% possible), gameplay that also caters to both new players and experts (also 100% possible), a perfectly updated UI that has every single aspect of the UI with a toggle to turn off, and auto hide. Literally a full overhaul of the game, to make it enjoyable as a new player and an expert gamer, that is a proper MMORPG that is fun for everyone. (Also 100% possible, just takes knowhow.)

Even if Square-Enix does everything perfect from this moment onward, I do not believe we will see veterans return to the franchise.

If we're talking about the whole series as a whole, I think it's even simpler than any of that stuff you posted. They should just stop moving the series towards straight up action and put the RPG back into RPG.

Incredible. You left out Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and you're holding yourself out as THE expert?

Mystic Quest counts about as much as Final Fantasy Adventure and the FF Legend series counts- All of these games were other games that got rebranded as Final Fantasy for the US release to spur sales (though the stated reason for FFMC was to be an "intro" RPG for US players unfamiliar with the genre)

FFA is actually the first game in the Mana series. The GBA remake would be renamed Legend of Mana. Secret of Mana, the first game to bear the name in the US, is the second game in the series.
FFL 1~3 are an entirely unrelated RPG series that had the FF name slapped on it- specifically the SaGa series.
I suppose Mystic Quest is an original game with the FF name on it (released with "USA" on the end of the title in Japan, kind of like what happened with the North American Super Mario 2), but other than the name, there is very little to connect it to the Final Fantasy franchise.

And then there's Bravely Default: basically a Final Fantasy with the serial numbers filed off. Literally the job system from Final Fantasy V, the recurring themes of crystals and worlds within worlds, the one evil nation that you work against for the first act of the story before discovering a greater evil behind it all, just a hint of religion is evil. All it's missing is moogles and chocobos.

Also Final Fantasy Type-0. If it's good enough for Theatrhythm, it's good enough for a real series fan.

I've been a Final Fantasy fan from the PS1 days, played the main series, Type-0, Theatrhythm, even 3 & 4 on the DS. My concern is what is FFXVII gonna be like. I hope the FFIX remake that I hear is on the cards is gonna be playing FFIX in the CGI as the actual game itself. I don't think they need to have any voiceovers in it as FFIX is a very different kind of game in terms of look-n-feel. If they do a FFIX trilogy, that'll give SE some good revenue & time to figure out what they want to do for FFXVII.

the way 16 plays its more like a spinoff, it's time for the next game to dial back the action and put the RPG back in RPG.

The reason I share this, is to prove I am the most experienced English speaking person, and more experienced in the Final Fantasy series, than most likely all of Square-Enix employees, as well as a vast majority of Japanese players as well.

Well that's claim and a bold one at that. I'd argue most of us played FF for most of our lives though, so number of playtime doesn't really hold much weight.

I agree. A lot of us here have a lot of FF experience already. I'm agreeing the RPG needs to be put back into the franchise. Maybe semi-real time battle encounters to bring the RPG battling back (Pokemon Sword/Shield & Scarlet/Violet did this with quite some success). SE needs to get on & finish FFVII trilogy. It will be several years when they'll even start working on XVII so they have time but not revenue so they best get on with things.

FF17 is likely already in the works but possibly not active development.

I guess people still think it's gonna be a new MMORPG to replace 14 but I doubt that.

Online gaming is the norm. During the late 90s and early 2000s, games such as PSO were deemed "Daring" or perhaps daunting. In 2024, the most popular titles are online. Fortnite, C.O.D, Marvel Rivals, etc.......

It would behoove SE to shift focus to online gaming (Where most profits lie), as opposed to these single player fads like DMC. What I am saying is, the next FF should be an MMO (Without Yoshi...). Interest just doesn't appear there for offline FF compared to the MMO who rake in money without selling anything.

I do think remakes of the past titles would sell better than any new FF single player game....just my opinion.

Having just bought XVI and playing through it, While it's a fun game to play, it's an Action Game that has a FF skin thrown on it. So totally agree.

Yes, I mean there isn't necessairly anything wrong with that, but it seems like they've taken from it that's what everyone wants. There are still plenty of people out there looking for the "good ol days" when you didn't need nonstop action to get people's attention.
