Well, I know the answer: so they can make F2P microtransaction money in China. Thing is, FFXIV is available there too (though seperate servers and some differences)

At least it seems like they contracted someone more capable than Nexon this time.

Mobile gaming is huge, due to accessibility. A high-end PC or even a gaming console is daunting for many. I know people who do not play consoles or PC, but their phones just as much as I do XI lol. Casual gaming has shifted from consoles to phones. PC was always the "High-end" affair.

It might, in China, where major games on mobile are very successful. In the Western world, people mostly play casual and gacha games on mobile- I don't see it being all that popular outside of China.

That being said, some might actually see this as "FFXIV Classic" since it appears to at least initially be based on A Realm Reborn without any expansions.

FFXIV is not "on rails" any more than FFXI is. But regardless, if you don't like something you don't have to play it. Doesn't mean other people can't, shouldn't, or won't enjoy it.
It's not an "abomination" either. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. But your post seems more like bandwagon hate. I doubt you actually played it to come to that conclusion.
