View Full Version : This proves that MMO players are extremely passionate

This is a really interesting story about a dedicated EverQuest player who became a developer to fix long-standing bugs in the game they love.
I don't think SE appreciates just how passionate MMO players can be.

If I were a developer for FFXI, I would continue the job adjustments that SE never really finished. (Ninja MAB, PLD AF Body, Beastmaster Frontline DD, Sortie expansion and Sortie crafting and Synergy recipes, to name a few).
What would you change or fix or add to FFXI if you could?
Thanks for reading.

More accessibility to +2 earrings, or to improve the current augment rate on them. It's bittersweet getting the earring you've been after for some time, but receiving a low roll on it, continuing the want for improvement.
RUN or PLD Empy set bonus fix would be cool. I'd like to play around with it, without fear of getting excessively 1 shot. Generally don't bring a tank to Dynamis anymore, but I'm certain others still do.
I know it's unlikely, but an overhaul to make the game a bit more modern, graphics and such, would be sweet. Would probably attract more players as well!

Expansion, new avatars, new trust magic...

The camera bouncing off the wall.
Animation lock that locks you so long from spells being cast on you, for so long you end up dying.
I also would like gamepad’s to function without a cable the same way they do with a cable connected. (Currently it’s not possible to use a PS5 or PS4 controller without a cable, due to lag input issues.)
I think that’s it.
(Don’t ask me about FFXIV, I would be here all day… auto hide chat log, auto hide hot bars, pop-up-battle text instead of flying text, turn off numerous UI features that can’t be turned off, so many changes needed in that game. So much so I can’t bear to play it anymore.)

I could have told you that without a news article. :p
Passion alone won't produce results though. SE is a business and businesses have to do what is in their own best interest for profitability, and that's why we don't see much investment in this project.
That said, the upcoming FFXI raid in FFXIV has had some people talking. For unrelated reasons I ended up in a long conversation with someone about XI and they had told me they havent played it yet but it was on th eir bucket list, they've always been curious but now they want to know more. It certainly is possible that this will spark some interest .

So you think their recent investments into blockchain garbage is in their best interest for profitability? Or do you think they take gambles based on other criteria? I think they would benefit more from investing into this game than most of their current ventures.

We all know how stupid this is but they apparently see dollar signs somewhere.
That said, they really haven't talked much about this in a while, so maybe they've figured out nobody asked for this crap.

Just curious, but what impact does a FFXI-Aesthetic alliance raid have on either game?
FFXIV is a very basic game with an unchanged formula since 2.0, so I fail to see what impact that is going to have in either game.
FFXIV isn’t going to change, and FFXI isn’t going to benefit much from it.
Perhaps a small group of FFXIV players might seek the FFXI free trial, and an even smaller group would pay for the game then likely instantly quit, due to its difficulty, and massively deep nature in design.
The people who quit XIV to play XI likely already have (I’m one) and anyone else just seeing an XI inspired raid won’t magically become a different person.
We all know this raid in XIV isn’t changing XIV. It will be the same simple raid with trash > boss > (repeat x4) if I recall correctly alliance raids have a whole 1 extra boss to normal dungeons.
Nothing to really even blink an eye at in my opinion.
As for the topic, I also would like to add, maybe removing PoL would be a nice addition. I’m surprised no one else mentioned it already. I personally am not bothered by PoL but most others seem to be. I figured I would add that to the list for the sake of others

The point isn't to "change XIV," the point is to bring players a piece of XI's world, characters and story. Not battle mechanics.
As for the topic, I also would like to add, maybe removing PoL would be a nice addition. I’m surprised no one else mentioned it already. It's been mentioned about a million times. FFXI is so heavily intertwined with PlayOnline's systems that outright removing it would be difficult. it also handles all of the game's account related stuff. Even XIV has a launcher, which serves the same purposes, POL just has a lot of flash.

If there ever was a vote, I'd definitely vote for keeping PlayOnline Viewer as it is, unless they re-worked things so that the current features that it still carries would be available in some form.
I would miss being able to just have PlayOnline Viewer running, and see if some old (or not so old) friends visit, and I would miss the message system therein as well, both of which I've had some use out of even while having no active content IDs (it seems that the PlayOnline Viewer only updates the content ID list when launching the game now, according to active subscriptions).
I do imagine being in a minority in this, if not the only one in said minority. ^^;

My memory was telling me that the Friend List Plus web application was discontinued a while back, perhaps with the Linkshell Community Beta site, but it seems it is still functional... so there is that, but it's not quite the same.

Yeah I understand. (The PoL thing.)
This is a “hypothetical” post, so I just threw it in there.

It's still linked to [1] below the left-side menu of things on the PlayOnline site(s).
Looking through ages past via the web archive, I couldn't find a time where the button isn't there, but the button did recently change, probably during the... uh, "re-design", of the site between very early 2024 and very late 2023 (couldn't find the news ticker for that, and I've lost some of the RSS feed items but I think that is what they called it, taking away the live Vana'diel feed and changing a button here and there).
Looking around a bit more, I did find the announcement I was thinking of, which mentions end of "Distribution and support for the PlayOnline Friend List Application" along with PlayOnline e-mail and others [2], but yeah, the 'Friend List Plus' web application is very much still there.
I wonder if someone forgot to flip a switch or few...
They also link to 'What is PlayOnline Plus' [3] still, which was discontinued back in 2010 [4] after which the page has only mentioned 'Friend List Plus'. They even ever so slightly "re-designed" that page as well [5], which really makes me wonder if it really was supposed to be discontinued, or if information really isn't traveling very well in places. ^^;

You're right, it's still there and it still works. I'm honestly shocked and didn't notice it before. I could swear they said they were discontinuing it ages ago.
