Race change options are coming?

Did anyone see this (and the many other cool things) coming in the Freshly Picked Vana’diel show on YouTube?

Personally, I’m not sure I’ll do it but I’m excited that such a big change is coming to the game! It’s encouraging that developers are still working super hard on this game after 22 years!

I need to watch the show myself (I got some notes from Reddit) but man, I’m hyped!

I have no interest personally in using a race change feature. However, it is exciting news to see new QOL and features being added.
An obvious combination with something like this would offer a name change service as well.

There was a lot of interesting QOL in this stream, I hope it all will become implemented, but we have to wait for an official announcement I guess.

Don't make this free, I would much rather pay a fee. If it's free you know they will either make it one single time use, or lock it behind some annoying content wall.

also consider adding new color variations of the head models that people can pick, there is no reason to not add new hair color variations now ps2 support has been dropped.

Because of this news, I have a sliver of hope that not only SE is listening, but also stills cares about their games, fans, and legacy.

If they do bring in “Fantasias” and the other changes mentioned, I will be more than glad to stay subbed to FFXI, and consider looking into their other games again.

It's long past due date, I can understand that in the early days reputation means everything, it took the best part of a year to level to 75, your rank was judged...

But not now, you can get to 99 in no time, reputation can be built and lost in days, no need to stop the playerbase from changing races

Generally speaking, in the past I've spoken against this idea because I believe the game was designed from the beginning to encourage users to make careful decisions- not being able to change (or easily change at least) your character and name theoretically pushed players to put a lot more thought into their characters (and in many cases, I think it likely has). That said, even considering this opinion, 20 years is a long time particularly if you made selections you've grown to regret. I've also supported being able to at least change your hair (head) selection if not race since well, barbers are a thing and many games have this- in FFXIV, hair (and face paint) can be changed freely even though full recustomization requires a purchasable fantasia.

Though in an ideal world, unlocking hairstyle changes would hopefully mean more options to choose from.

My selection of Galka in XI was based on it being the least human-like race, and I am a hroth in FFXIV now for the same reason.

Unless the base engine got an overhaul as to accommodate extra feats, don't expect any radical additions. Even FF14 actually starts to reach this limitation as well, for example with transitions between 5.x to 6.0 for armoire storage, promising extra slots, what they did instead is deleting belt category (in which personally still wish to have them got glamour displayed back from 1.x days) & then reallocate them into the rest of armoire categories, hence seemingly have them expanded slots. Also with old jobs having new skills, but what they did instead is trimming old redundant skills &/or combined them either into unified skill or tiered-upgraded skills as jobs got level ups.

Honestly, the upcoming-promised race changes didn't really excite me as much since the option would be as is per base game, highly doubt they will add new ones.

In short: PS2 engine limitations, deal with it. /kekw

Don't implement this in a bad way, if this is added in a way people can't enjoy after 20 years people are going to be really annoyed.

I think most people would rather pay a fee to get this so they can use it as much as they want, to change hair style etc than for it to be a one off thing as I have a feeling it will be.

Please ask for feedback on how you're going to implement this, if it's not as people expect.

Really? I'm not a big Galka fan, but the Worf face is definitely the prize pick in my opinion.

Now, bald Hume, that I can't understand at all, that guy looks like... well, the beastmaster quest guy seems like the perfect personality match for that face.

According to Freshly Picked Vana'diel, it looks like you will be able to re-select your race, gender, and size, including hairstyle, all together from scratch.
(However, this is still under consideration, so there is a possibility that this may change in the future.)
