(WARNING)
It is strongly advised to simply use the BGwiki page instead of this guide.
Keeping up with both guides is proving extremely time consuming and unfruitful.
This guide is outdated, and after testing has proven to have quite a few errors.
The current BGwiki page is the most up-to-date, and is nearly, if not entirely, free of any errors.

Hello. please read the following:
This is the:
Final Fantasy XI Simple Mission Guide
This guide is designed to be clean, comprehensible and to the point.
If one follows the guide in order, collecting home points, and survival guides along the way, it will naturally create a smooth and sensible flow in gameplay.
*Note: It is crucial that you follow the guide in order, including reading the level 1-18 section. Even if you've already achieved a level beyond level 18, as it contains crucial starting information.
**Note: Steps within this guide listed as "Fight:" will require you to interact with the listed feature, to initiate the fight.
**Note: There are two types of "hidden" targets in FFXI. "???" and "Blank Target" (Blank targets are ??? with no text.) You must "tab" or press right/left on gamepad to find them.
**Note: This is not a complete guide to FFXI. Join a linkshell, refer to other wiki pages, reddit and other sources to fulfill your needs. This guide is a focus on only missions.
**Note: Finally, this is a guide. It will provide you information on a sensible course, but deviating from the course to unlock an additional job, or other activities is encouraged. "Following it in order" refers to ensuring you follow the steps, and quest layout order to optimize your mission progress. It does not indicate you must play the game the way the guide suggests.
'''Story and Rhapsodies of Vana'diel information:'''
The choice is yours if you prefer to enjoy the story, or focus on RoV missions to unlock Key items. This guide provides both options, to allow the player to focus on "just the story" or "finishing Rhapsodies of Vana'diel to unlock Key items" via footnotes in the associated missions.
(WARNING)
*Utilizing mods such as 60-fps, and other visual mods interferes with "Cutscenes" in FFXI. It is a violation of the FFXI Terms of Service aggrement and should be not utilized, especially while watching cutscenes as it will cause crashing and other issues, including the risk of being banned from FFXI.

Congratulations on Level 99 and completing every mission!
(Note: The above is not a full list of every mission, this is a work in progress.)
The game has really only begun!
(Info on skillchainings/magic burst and other info important for getting started at endgame.)
Fast + efficient Skillup Methods:
Weapon Stat:

Subjob Dancer/Dual Wield if possible, any form of haste/Double attack and attack Colonization Reive barrier with low level/level 1 weapon.
Enhancing:
Cast Protect > Shell on a trust
_____(Note: This is more effective than casting on yourself or another PC.)
Bard:
String/Wind
Cast Foe Requiem > Foe Requiem II > Foe Requiem III > Etc on an enemy/Colonization Reive barrier.
Shield:
Pull multiple enemies, cast Phalanx and Reprisal heal if needed.

Wouldn't it be better just making a guide on one of the community wiki pages (BG-Wiki for instance) ? I doubt a lot of new players visit t these forums.

My aim is to create a guide that is comprehensive, to the point, and contains information on a single page.
I notice BGwiki/FFXIclopedia prefers to spilt their information on as many different pages as possible, and likes to include additional information such as a missions release date, optional dialog, etc. My goal is again, to create a comprehensive and to the point guide.
BGwiki stated to me personally that they prefer to keep things how they are so I chose to make a guide here.
Once I finish the guide (at least the missions) I plan to share its existence with others.
There are also no adds on the official forums.
Additionally, those sites allow users to edit the work of other users, and I would not like to spend the time editing something to have someone go back and add more information that contradicts the purpose of the guide itself. (The point being comprehensible and "to the point" style guide.)

I love this style of guide, reminds me of the 90s. Gonna be pretty huge for FFXI though.
Also, I think it's mandatory that you have ASCII Art for FFXI in the title.

My point was more, about how many players visit the forums. I never hear people suggest it. It is either the wiki sites or ffxiah. Not the official forums.
But I'm not telling you what you should and should not do, if you want to keep it here, more power to you?

What did "BG wiki tell you"? Just to confirm what the issue is. There may simply be a misunderstanding.

I say go for it, if it makes you (and potentially others) happy. Some people may find your guide easier to read. What's to lose if you enjoy doing it?
Not sure how many bots read guides though.

It's nice that you're doing this but this space wasn't really designed for this. Any one of the FF wikis / resource sites would be better suited.
Additionally, those sites allow users to edit the work of other users, and I would not like to spend the time editing something to have someone go back and add more information that contradicts the purpose of the guide itself.
Generally:
- Guides do not get edited by other users. Yes, it is possible, but generally people have the courtesy not to.
- If people want to suggest changes, the talk pages make that easy and no one has to commit to anything.
- If someone makes problematic edits to a page, it is a simple task to revert the changes.

I would like to reiterate what was said previously.
BGwiki/FFXIclopedia likes to create multiple pages for content and already have their design in place.
If I were to edit BGwiki/clopedia as you seem to suggest, I would have to completely redesign their entire website.
For example, mission guides would be "guides" containing only the information needed, instead of how it is currently designed to be "informational" and contain all information such as the quest release date, game history, optional dialog NPC's and many many other features I will not like to include.
For you and other players to suggest I use these sites is a direct contradiction to their seemingly purposeful design choices.
Another example is creating a weapon such as Twashtar. They have like 25 pages on an item called "Twashtar" and my aim will be to include all information on a single page.
The forums or reddit would be the perfect site to create these guides that I aim to create.
Thank you for your suggestion though.
I will continue to utilize the forums and once I finish I will create posts to start to share it's existence.

If I were to edit BGwiki/clopedia as you seem to suggest, I would have to completely redesign their entire website. You've got some strange logic. No, you don't have to redesign their site. You just create a new page called "Guide: Getting Started in Vana'diel" or something like that. Load it up with whatever it is you want to say. Then, find an appropriate place where it can be linked from.
FFXIclopedia also already has a dedicated category for player-written guides and also has better information on the basics, where BG is more suited to advanced users. So I would suggest FFXIclopedia between the two in this case.
It's really not hard, and if you really need it there are those who could assist you.
I will continue to utilize the forums and once I finish I will create posts to start to share it's existence. You can do whatever you like, but these forums get very little traffic, and for the most part it isn't new users or distant returnees. We're trying to help you get the most out of your well-intentioned efforts. But it seems very odd to me that you're writing off the resources that new players actually use in favor of a place that only a few grizzled veterans tend to visit. Even a blog site, or perhaps the FFXI subreddit would also be more effective places for something like this.
For you and other players to suggest I use these sites is a direct contradiction to their seemingly purposeful design choices. We're suggesting these things because they actually welcome guides, FFXIclopedia in particular. There is no contradiction here. Like I said, FFXIclopedia has a category section SPECIFICALLY for guides:
https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Guides
I'm trying to understand why you have such a defiant attitude towards those trying to help you.

I'm trying to understand why you have such a defiant attitude towards those trying to help you.
I actually was going to say "I could possibly create a individual guide such as the -Quickstart 1-119 Guide-" on BGwiki, but I don't see the difference.
As far as "defiant" I am not sure what you mean.
I already said BGwiki allows anyone to edit anything, both FFXIclopedia and BG do this, for being my reason why I am reluctant.
I personally consider reluctance and defiance two quite different behaviors.
I even wouldn't consider my behavior reluctance much either, considering I already reached out to BGwiki specifically.
What I fail to gather is why you seem more opposed to me using the forums instead of a wiki site even after I explained my reasoning.
I'm not defiant at all really. If BGwiki -want- the guide I can easily copy paste it, then make some minor formatting edits.
Even someone else could do that, so I really don't see the sticking point honestly.
The only "problem" I'm seeing is people not wanting me to do this on the forums.
I already tried BGwiki, and they were not very encouraging, which is why I already said, I chose to do it here. (They were actually discouraging, because they told me they would not like me to make changes.)
At that time I didn't consider making a separate guide, but it seems pointless in my mind to create something that already exists on BGwiki multiple times over.
Perhaps instead of saying I'm defiant, maybe you could explain why you feel me doing this here or creating a separate page on a wiki would be any different?
The only people who would know about the guide on a wiki in my mind would not exceed the number of people being told of its existence regardless of its URL.

Also, I think it's mandatory that you have ASCII Art for FFXI in the title.
I just tried this actually lol.
Unfortunately the FFXI forums does not recognize or auto-deletes multiple spaces.
So "Final Fantasy XI" in ASCII comes out to look like:

I already said BGwiki allows anyone to edit anything, both FFXIclopedia and BG do this, for being my reason why I am reluctant. And I explained to you why this isn't really a problem.
Guides generally do not get edited by other users. Talk pages allow for suggestions. And if someone makes undesirable edits you can simply revert them in about 2 seconds. I've admin'd multiple wikis over the years and I assure you even the worst changes are easy to fix.
As far as my comments about your attitude, this centers around how dismissive you've been of all the advice and suggestions presented to you. It doesn't really seem like you've evaluated what was said, and are just sticking to your guns regardless of the merit or lack thereof of any of the ideas presented.
The only "problem" I'm seeing is people not wanting me to do this on the forums. it's not that we don't want you to do it, it's simply us telling you that it's not really the best solution. On these forums, you get very little exposure to your target audience: New/inexperienced users. The forum structure itself really isn't great for guides, which is why you don't really see many of them here if you look around. That and just really, not very many FFXI players actually utilize these forums.
Forum threads get buried over time and can be hard to find, even knowing what you're looking for using the iffy search function. If you proceed with this guide here, once you're done with it and we stop talking about it, it will quickly just fade into obscurity.
]s I said before: You can do whatever you want, I'm not ordering you or demanding that you do anything in particular. But I do hold the opinion that you might want to re-evaluate your stance, because doing so would likely allow you to make more of an impact. These words are posted here as a service to you, not as a command to do something. I also make this suggestion to you because while there are lots of guides on FFXIclopedia, most of them are pretty out of date. So it would benefit from something a little more current. But that's just my thoughts on the matter.
Regarding ascii art: There is a way around this in the form of code tags:

###### # ####### # # ###
# # # # ## # # ## # # ##### ## #### # # # # #
# # ## # # # # # # # ## # # # # # # # # # #
##### # # # # # # # ##### # # # # # # # # #### # # #
# # # # # ###### # # ###### # # # # ###### # # # # #
# # # ## # # # # # # # ## # # # # # # # # #
# # # # # # ###### # # # # # # # # #### # # # ### This will use a monospaced font which will work with ascii art. now, I copied the text above so it doesn't come out right as some spaces were removed. But if you insert the needed spaces it will work. So if you insist on sticking with this flawed platform, you can at least add a little touch of coolness.

Shame the code window is fixed height! lol
I actually was impressed with that second one, I had a good laugh. Thanks!
it's not that we don't want you to do it, it's simply us telling you that it's not really the best solution.
I guess the response here is yes I'm not overly concerned with any thing thats being said so far because I am not finished with the quide, not even the mission part, which is my main goal, so I really don't want anyone seeing it. (Kinda.)
The main reason I posted it already, was so I could get more motivated in finishing it.
Me keeping it on just my PC and working on it was not getting me far. Posting it to the forums so at least some people see it, and the fact I can link it if say someone in my LS is mentioning doing missions I can link it for them to use, which has already happened. This has encouraged me to make much more progress on it, and sort of stick to it more, which "goal accomplished" I guess.
Once I do in fact finish all missions at least up to RoV, excluding TVR, this is when I will consider my options in gaining traction/views. I'm not really focused on that aspect yet at all, since its currently unfinished.
I hope this clarifies my behavior. I'm not really opposed to copy-pasting onto BGwiki if they agree they don't mind, or want the guide on their site. They could flat out tell me no, I won't know until I ask/talk to them. (Again.)
As for XIclopedia I dont even know who to talk to yet, again, this will be a thing I venture in the future once the guide is more complete. For now my goal is just to finish it.
I do appreciate your info and suggestions. They just are being put on hold so to speak.

I would like to go ahead and share the one of the main reasons I am doing this.
I just finished "Magicite" mission that most all players will ever do in FFXI.
For a comparison to BGwiki's guide and mine.
-BGwiki's guide has anywhere between 80 to over 101 lines of text. (Excluding mission name, mission details/rewards at the top of the page.)
-FFXIclopedia: over 85 lines excluding many misc. lines of text from the page.
My guide has exactly 42 lines of text including the mission name.
This is line count only. To further explain, my guide will send the player on an efficient path, avoiding needless retracing of steps, among other useful -to the point- style guide help.
Alhanelem
02-12-2024, 11:45 AM
well line counts aren't really directly comparable as different sites and pages will fit differently. But if you think you can improve something like info about a specific mission with less words, as long as it's still clear and readable, you can just edit that page on the wiki. The worst thing that happens is if people dont like it it can just be changed back.
Haldarn

I think there's a functional difference in providing encyclopaedic information on a certain subject and supplying the absolute efficient minimum.
I can see the fun in producing a single piece of work in the form of a guide using the latter ethic. I can appreciate the deep-dive information and webpage article layout of the former. Certainly room for both!
However, if you place your guide on a wiki as it's own article page (with a PLEASE DO NOT EDIT note at the top), you have the added bonus of being able to link to items and maps within the wiki and use tooltip popups for your own page, which would make it more useful to your readers.
I appreciate the concern about adverts on the page. These disappear off all pages except the home page if you're logged in to ffxiclopedia, but the rest of the useless information scattered about the sidebars and underneath the article are certainly annoying; the price you pay for hosting!
Can I also suggest that you consider ffxiah.com who have the most active forum community for the game and host many job-focussed guides, with the ability to link to their own item pages, which go on to link out to the wikis for further info.

I believe the guide is fully re-written and now needs testing.
I shall proceed with testing, then I will format it for BGwiki and add it to BGwiki. If BGwiki deletes it, I have a backup on my PC as well as I will have this as a backup.
Edit: I guess I can post to XIclopedia as well.

I was involved with it for a long time. And honestly it doesn't take that many people to keep a wiki on a game recieving as little new content as this one is reasonably up to date, particularly when you're focusing more on the general info and not the technical details, which has always been a distinction between the two.
Also telling people not to post there only ensures that it's only "one guy" doing the work, which you have a vested interest in. I refer to BG all the time, don't get me wrong. But particularly for older stuff I find that XIclopedia has better coverage, and they also don't bias the reader against checking out any particular content... AHEM. It's true what I said about XI being more open, since i had to fight with you to make one page just slightly less biased (which it still is, just not egrigiously so)
Just let people decide for themselves. They're obviously going to post to BG anyway, no sense discouraging them from posting it to every info site under the sun, no matter how obscure.

That said, if FFXIclopedia is mainly one person only now as well, and me the only one on Gamer Escape, I guess it would not make a big difference heh. I think they might have a bit more enegry than I do, though!

I've been working on my first mythic in game, so I've been moving much slower than normal on progress for this guide.
The next step will be quite time consuming, because I want to take it step by step in-game with a fresh character to see if its 100% perfect.
I also will make minor edits to help make it less confusing for a newer player.
Once these steps are complete, then I will add it to the associated sites. I already have a BGwiki account, I'd still need to make a XIclopedia one, and Gamerescape one.
I honestly never used the Gamerescape page FFXI. I did use it ALL the time for FFXIV though. Especially during 1.0, it was extremely helpful.

The FFXI wiki was cloned from FFXIclopedia as the same staff originally operated that. But Wikia/Fandom does not let you delete a wiki once created, and they will take control away from you and give it to someone else if it it's inactive. From the point of the split, the content does vary but the older pages are basically all identical.

Not that I really care to defend BG-Wiki, I find it's useful for "relevant" content but is less thorough on "pointless" content (contrast BG Wiki's take on gardening (https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Gardening) versus FFXIclopedia's category on it (https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Gardening).)
That said, I only visit FFXIclopedia if I absolutely have to to track down some obscure detail, because I still don't trust it after one of its ads (before the Fandom subdomain, around Abyssea's heyday?) served up a virus that took me a few days to clean up from. The less relevant content takes a back seat to the overall progress on the wiki. BG has vastly more editors and more quality work being done at all times for close to a decade now.
The gardening or whatever is for when I or anyone up to the task gets around to it. However, it is not hard to make any edge case like this superior to what exists now. In general the information and layout on Clopedia is inferior or superfluous. Even fringe sections that get looked at for answers to something and cited as why it matters, are inaccurate or flat-out wrong.
I would love to work with players on this, and often end up looking over or touching up the work that does get done every day. Which of course also takes time. However, I can say the integrity of the information is overall superior on BG compared to Clopedia.

FFXIclopedia et. al. use the original description blurb provided by Square Enix at the top of the page. But on BG, a paragraph effectively saying "nobody does this content and you shouldn't either" was added to SE's blurb. I objected to the notion that anyone should be actively discouraged from any content in the game on a reference page about that content, and stick to informing the reader about what that content is and how it works. I removed the discouraging blurb and Spicy reverted it. After some back and forth we settled on a *slightly less* discouraging blurb. I still see it as inappropriate and unnecessary (i.e. let people decide for themselves if content is "worth playing" or not rather than pushing them in one direction or the other) but I know it will get reverted if I try to make the page more neutral.
That said, I only visit FFXIclopedia if I absolutely have to to track down some obscure detail, because I still don't trust it after one of its ads (before the Fandom subdomain, around Abyssea's heyday?) served up a virus that took me a few days to clean up from.I understand your trepidation but this could have happened anywhere, it wasn't like FFXIclopedia consciously decided to serve viruses to people. Let me bottom-line it, man. FFXIclopedia had an army of hundreds of nerds with nothing better to do to build up its knowledge base as everything was fresh and exciting. It might not be as elegantly-curated, but it's exhaustive for the pre-sunset part of FFXI's life. BG-Wiki is never going to find somebody who has so little going on in their life that they'll hammer on one pointless NM for weeks to figure out the exact range of Eagle Eye Shot delay reduction evoliths that's available.
BG might be the better source for news now, but dismissing FFXIclopedia because it's past its prime is choosing to ignore a wealth of esoteric information that is, at best, implausible to recreate.

dismissing FFXIclopedia because it's past its prime is choosing to ignore a wealth of esoteric information that is, at best, implausible to recreate.
Example:
https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Bubbly_Bernie
I myself determined Bubbly Bernie's MP by using a BLM to aspir away all of its MP- since it has no spells and doesn't have auto refresh, you can get a 100% accurate determination of its max MP (it has MP because its job is PLD).
While the template has always provided for users to put in both an HP and MP total, for most NMs with MP it is hardewr to determine how much they have because they cast spells, and some mobs have auto refresh etc. There's only a few monsters for which their max MP is known- One of the others is Golden-tongued Culberry (https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Golden-Tongued_Culberry) (about 30k MP), where the strategy was usually to kite the NM and let hem cast spells til he runs out of MP, at which point he will stand still and do absolutely nothing, not even auto-attack. Generally, mobs pay the same MP costs players do, though there are exceptions, like Meteor, since our meteor is totally different from the one used by monsters; so you can calculate their MP by adding up the MP cost of all the spells they cast until they don't cast spells anymore- This is simply rare because 99% of the time, a mob will never run out of MP before you kill it.
Also on Bubbly:
"Can be defeated by an alliance of level one jobs."
(https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Bubbly_Bernie)You know, I wonder how many times this was actually done lol.

The problem in completely ignoring one of them to update the popular one, is what someone said on the previous page. That site could poof on a whim, the majority of people upkeeping it don't play retail or appreciate it in any form. It is always a fear of many that contributing to a sole source of information could end up blowing up in our faces. So I don't think its wise to discourage anyone from adding information to the wikis given that could happen to any of them from what I know. They should be able to just copy and paste it to each one at this point, with such a small community I don't see the problem.

Big "screw you" to the community, I guess, but who it really hurts is new players who never had a chance to have anything to do with the whole situation. Can't say I was ever a witness to any of this. I'm sure you have a reason to say that so I'm not doubting you, but not having observed this stuff myself I can't really use it to pass judgement.

You know what, this is like a tangent to a tangent to the actual thread here, so I'm just going to point you to the FFXIAH thread about this and let you do your own research: https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/57904/anyone-got-a-drg-guide-bg-wiki-been-deleted
Sorry to sound like a bit of an ass about it, but I think you'll agree that we don't need to see much more of that spill over here.
