Every other combat skill in the game now has books to use for skill ups, let's not leave our automaton friends behind!

I agree, +1.

As much as I agree there should be books for it, I would prefer to eliminate the need for the automaton to skill up at all. Wyverns don't skill up. Jugs don't skill up. Avatars don't skill up.

Skilling up my automaton's skills was soooo gosh darn easier than leveling up my own, even before any books came out.
Use the correct attachments and maneuvers and your robot buddy will skill up VERY fast when deployed.

Perhaps in 75 or 99 days, but have you tried recently on i-level content? :/

forgive me if i take VERY fast with a grain of salt, you only have percolator and water maneuvers. your automaton doesn't benefit from skill up food, rhapsody bonuses, or master equipment.

You just set the auto on a uragnite or a couple reives. No gear, no manuevers, and you cap overnight.

It is a pretty simple task.

Don't afk burn up the job and it's far less of a problem. At a certain point the skills finish with playing the job or the mage puppet can cast in revives without much input.

Physical/Ranged I understand, but what about magic?

no one said it was difficult to cap skills the old fashioned way, just that the automaton was left out by not having skill books. every other job can do exactly the same things you guys are mentioning to cap their skills too.

There are other things that affect the skill up rate on attachments other than just water and percolator, such as how, what, when it casts spells.
Also can affect how often, which type, what target, type of spells, etc... by use of maneuvers and attachments.
I had to figure all that out the first few weeks PUP came out before we HAD any info online.
Play, try, adjust, take notes, etc... and you'll see how easy it is to control the robot with what you use and do.
The order you use maneuvers, and how MANY maneuvers you use HIGHLY affects how your robot reacts and casts spells. Also remember the types of Animator affects commands, too.
Give it a try and experiment and don't just blindly use internet for help.
That's how I had to do it, but I am patient enough to teach myself stuff and learn by observation and note taking, and not just blindly follow the web that is not as helpful as it can be.

This is a great idea, skilling up an Automaton is like a side quest that leads to playing solo

Yeah and as Sp1cy said.... stop exp-burning up your job and actually PLAY the job by exploring, and playing the game, not having it stand around and gain exp and no other skills improved other than watching the screen.
And remember, just like trusts, whenever you level up, your robot does not level up UNTIL you [Deactivate] and re-[Activate] it, but still needs to be used, [Deploy]ed, etc... to gain skills. That usually involves interaction with the keyboard or controller, but merc-payers rarely do that after they get to the payout party place.

Automaton magic skill-up is objectively harder, especially in i-level content, since pets only received Magic Evasion updates this past February. Jobs with pets require a randomly-timed static update, whenever Square Enix feels like it.

There's also a seething hatred in your months late reply. So, who hurt you? Was it the mercs? Damn those mercs. Or was it just the people who choose to play the game as they see fit, and oh, it just so happens to different from how you'd like them to play? Damn them too. No, wait. Grow up!

Woah there, don't tell the player that they are their own responsibility. They won't accept that or be happy. Now you are just some person full of "hatred" that needs to "grow up" or whatever other nonsense people say because someone said no.

Practice what you preach. When was the last time you paired up with another PUP player? You probably wouldn't also play with another PUP, unless you two were duo'ing something, right? So, let's hear it. What was your experience playing with other PUPs? What job did you go as? How did you contributed to their game-playing experience?

That's right. You didn't. You don't. You just want new PUPs to have the same difficult, frustrating experience you did. If new players have it any easier than you, then that somehow diminishes you? Give me a break.

You are just gate-keeping content to continue separating you from newer players or people who want to try a new job, skill-up books doesn't diminish that. You're just afraid that if more PUPs exist, that some how diminishes you? Please. Don't act like you're playing the game on some moral high-ground, when you just want to keep new players are far away from your progression, so you can maintain an elitist attitude.

When new players or job-experimenters come around, why would they play with you, if you have this awfully uncooperative attitude? Poor collaborators like you are why people would rather stare at the screen for skill-ups or use books, than suffer the indignity of playing with an grumpy, downtrodden elitist.

It must be really lonely up there on your pedestal, Spicy.

What an obnoxious and irrelevant rebuttal to an assertion of personal responsibility over trivialities.

Well i did have a GM report filed against me for proving someone they were a liar (this "person" likes to file blanket reports on bots every day), and I leveled up PUP the first day it came out and then many other times with Sp1cy when we were doing Abyssea and other stuff (even though he had me also go as WHM, BLM, and THF a few times when needed).
Also I figured out how to play PUP, and took own notes, all before there WAS anything online for PUP players to refer to, and wrote over 75% of the info on ffxiclopedia for information about using PUP before anyone else had stuff. And I remember playing solo in Mount Zhaylom fighting crawlers and trolls and linking and tanking them as PUP-robot-Fellow, while there were parties of people there getting wiped with just one target, and everyone even back then used to say i was an idiot and lolpup for using the job.
So yes i can get rightfully salty when people are trying to shortcut and be lazy leveling up a job (not just PUP), when I had to do it without any help, and no in-game gimmicks.
That's my two cents...
