View Full Version : New Wardrobes

After waiting such a long time for the coming "Inventory Relief" my disappointment in FFXI and Square Enix as a whole cannot be overstated that the change is simply 4 new paid Wardrobes, expecting us to pay 8$ more per month to play at optimal inventory. I was annoyed enough at the 4$ change years ago but ultimately it came with 2 free ones as well, so at least that was something. They've created the inventory problem by making it hard for us to throw gear away because so much of it is always useful somewhere, and are selling us the solution. I've been on the fence a long time, only playing occasionally, but this may be the final nail in the coffin for me.

They told us right from the start their inventory solution was going to be premium.
Were you planning to quit way back then and just waited until now to go through with it?

I don't believe that's the case, I'd love if you could link me to such a thing, if it was, I completely missed it, I almost quit when the first wardrobe service came out, but the fact that two came out for free was at least something, had I known that was the plan at the time, I would've completely quit then, yes, I more or less did anyway, I've barely played these past few years, largely due to inventory issues, and yes I did decide to completely quit now.
Edit: Someone is compiling the mentioned inventory comments from SE sources:
https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Inventory_Expansion
These did not at all give me the impression that the inventory changes would simply be new paid wardrobes, it's easy to back-justify it now, but the comments are extremely open-ended and nonspecific, though they usually point at something new, rather than more of the same.

I will definitely agree that I was not expecting it to just be more generic wardrobes like what we've had in the past. My mistake.
Why create a permanent solution to a problem you created when you can create a temporary one while also inflating the ways to fill that extra space (additional equipsets in preperation for more situational gear) at a monthly fee no less.
I don't remember what was said but in some interview (i think; maybe a post though) I did get the impression that w/e they decided on would be a premium "feature."

You are correct in remembering that at some point in recent, they began discussing it as a paid feature. I'm the guy who started compiling those quotes recently but I'd have to happen back onto the post or interview to be able to cite it. Thankfully, it's the player's wiki and anyone can add it as well if they come across the information.

Perhaps it was the July 2020 FINAL FANTASY XI Digest?
At least that's what I was thinking of just the other day.
It'll most likely end up as a paid feature [...]

I actually thought the bags are 1 EUR or 1 USD each, but only recently figured out that they're double that. Granted, they work on all characters on the account, but methinks I'll stick to my extra characters that only cost 1 EUR each... due to which I already pay almost 20 EUR per 30 days.

Well, I never did see that, I wish I would've seen that, however, even at that phrasing, if you'll remember the earliest inventory expansion we got, the satchel, was tied to a one time cost, I could've stomached that if the price was reasonable, but, effectively raising the subscription fee is what really turns me off, had I known that specifically was what was going to happen, yes I would've fully quit sooner.

Imagine quitting because of an optional 2~12 dollar charge a month. Yikes.

Went spelunking for quotes this morning and turned up quite a bit about Inventory Expansion. They've mentioned it will be a paid addition since July 2020.

the satchel, The satchel was never tied to a real money cost. The Locker has an in-game cost, but that's it.
Idk why anyone's outraged at paying for extra storage space, it's not exactly an unusual thing in this age. 14 players have been paying extra for more storage since the game came out. I'm frankly more surprised they haven't opened a paid item store for FFXI, they keep adding new vanity items in the monthly login campaigns- they could be making money off those.

Before someone else posts it and launches into a lengthy post...
Yes, you had to pay for a security token to get the satchel. SE didn't make a ton of money on them and they were priced fairly cheaply.
The satchel was basically your "gift" or "reward" for tying a security token to your account originally. By getting players to attach one to their account, it reduced SE's customer support costs for all of the reports of hacked accounts prior to its release. Players benefited from the increased storage and reducing the chance of losing their account for the months of time it took for the recovery process.

The software token costs nothing and also grants access. The intent was not to sell you extra storage space (even if you want to see it that way, it was a one time cost if you got the physical token), it was to encourage players to secure their accounts because it costs them money dealing with all the people who get hacked, along with stolen accounts regularly being used for RMT botting activity, and the potential lost customers resulting from it as well.
The security token (physical or otherwise) also grants a perk in FFXIV, granting you a free teleport destination of your choosing. I don't think anyone sees it as a feature being sold, particularly because most people use the software token now. Ultimately, even if you wanted to argue it was a "paid storage service" then, it isn't anymore.
(I'm not sure if they even offer the physical token anymore; although one was included with the collector's edition of FFXIV 1.0- Which I have but have not used because my original token still works- They said it would last a few years, but mine is still going strong with no indication of dying soon, like 10 years later)

The software token didn't exist for the first several years of the satchel's existence.

Yes it was a paid thing at first for a while.

Again though, the point wasn't to make big bucks off of people wanting more storage, it was a carrot on a stick to promote better account security. Otherwise, they wouldn't have later provided a cost free option (which would offend anyone who paid to do it, and that never really happened), and/or made it available for a fee outside of the security token.
I can tell you I was certainly afraid of RMT stealing my account, even though I generally practice good security and don't easily fall for phishing scams. it was a no brainer.

i just noticed they added a display at the title screen indicating if any wardrobes are active. I guess this makes it clear they aren't character specific, but it does kinda come across as a reminder as to what you don't have lol.

Yes the [3] & [4] were there, but the [5] thru [8] only appeared in the past week or so with last update.

As noted, I probably just never noticed them before. Heck i didn't even notice it the first couple times I logged in since the update, since they're like 90% transparent when not active.

I wasn't sure if it was, but I went on the SE account website, and it turns out you can in fact still get the physical security token.
