View Full Version : Return home during the Holidays

I'm very saddened by the return home to Vana'diel happening during the holidays. The holidays are about spending time with family, so many of my friends are not going to be able to come back because of that or they are out of town. I also expect that if anyone does happen to make it back they will have little to no greeting because I myself will be online very little. I understand this was a last minute idea from someone to make up for missing it during the usual early November time; however, I really wish we could have just had it early-mid January. Its very hard to follow the "That being said, we have no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence. Don't forget your family, your friends, your school or your work." when your only offering things during the biggest family and friends time of the year.

It wasn't to make up for removing it in November, they decided to move it as a business strategy.

On the flipside of that though, they may be thinking about people who are reframing from being with family this Christmas due to the current pandemic.
I won't be spending time with family this Christmas, due to the risk factors, and I suspect quite a few people will be in the same position.

This holiday season, people shouldn't be travelling and spending time with family to avoid spreading the virus. Online chats, games, etc offer a way to interact with others that, while not ideal, is better than nothing. They made a smart choice here.
Also, it was a clear and specific decision to hold the campaign this month, it wasn't a "whoops, sorry we forgot to do it in November." Which should, by your logic cause you to make the same complaint since November also includes a big family holiday (For North America, anyway)

Good point from Sirmarki, however, your to your point about the campaign in November, is always prior to the holiday and did not include the holiday. This one includes two holidays. I am just vocalizing my frustration with the fact people I look forward to returning for a few weeks every 6months or so, will not be returning for this one. I'm glad they are offering the campaign at all, but really regret that they couldn't offer another (sooner then the normal may run) not during Holidays.

I mean, the point of these campaigns is to get people to come back, not just to play for free a few days periodically. I think your complaint is silly, holidays are a day each, not the entire campaign- that's plenty of time to enjoy things even if you disregard CDC health advice and meet with people anyway. But that's just my opinion. This is a good thing that they're offering this during a time when in person gatherings are being (and should be) discouraged. The very fact that I care about my family and friends is why I'm not holding or attending any parties or gatherings. It's not even because anyone is saying to do it, it's because it's a logical, rational decision to make under the current circumstances.
Personally I only pay sporadically but I'm still subbed, so I can play whenever the mood strikes me and not just when SE has a campaign. Honestly, if you're literally only playing during free campaigns as a strategy, you may as well just stop playing entirely. I don't want to discourage anyone from coming back to the game, but it doesn't sound like you're really enjoying it that much.

I mean, I'm sorry you feel it's "antagonistic," but this this thread is a serious case of looking a gift horse in the mouth. They don't HAVE to do free campaigns at all. People should be thankful they exist instead of complaining that the timing isn't exactly when they wanted their free gift and essentially threatening to not use the free gift.

If they just want to play during free access and free access only they are quite entitled to do so, they don't need you telling them not to.

They absolutely are, but I'm also just as entitled to question why someone is doing so. But personally, If I didn't like the game enough to play it more than a little bit every 3-4 months, i'd question why I'm still playing it and probably play something else. (And, there was a period of time when I did just that)
But I also don't usually tell people to ignore other people or anything like that. Let people make up their own minds. Doing what you did amounts to harassment.

I'm holding by what I said at the beginning. To you holidays may only be one day each, but they are not to everyone. For some of us this is the only time of year we know we can see our spouse and children and/or extended family. Your job or situation is not the same as everyone else's situation. I'm really not trying to get into a covid discussion, although based on Sirmarki's post I can see how doing it during the times they are is beneficial to others and I apricate that is it. All I was saying above is that many of my friends, actual players, that normally I can convince to return for a couple weeks to see all the new exciting things are not going to be able to come back during those times. Sometimes, they decide to sub for a few months (or years) after, which as you stated is SE's goal. I was just bringing up the situation to bring awareness, I'm sorry you find it silly, but I don't.

That's an indisputable fact, whether your gatherings or celebrations exceed that duration or not. And even though in the past i've visited relatives (or had them visit) for a week or more, that doesn't mean I spend the entire time with them, there's still time for myself. Your individual circumstances may be different but your post came off as seriously ungrateful. Not everyone has your circumstances, just like not everyone has mine, People will still benefit from this campaign, even if you don't personally.
There are local, n ational or global events every month of the year, no matter when they hold the campaigns they can't please everybody. November wouldn't have been any better because of Thanksgiving, March for Easter, et cetra, et cetera. Not to mention all the observances in Japan.

The November campaign is not during Thanksgiving. It always ends a week before at least. The only thing I would have to be grateful for is, that during the campaigns, I can get some friends to come back for a time. I personally am always subbed for it. If my friends are not coming back because it falls on holidays, I do not have to be grateful. Your missing the point of my post and taking a tangent. I am posting on their official forum with my thoughts on what they are doing. I do not have to agree with everything they do, nor with however you think. They cannot please everyone, but if I do not voice my thoughts about what they are doing I would have no right to be upset about things they do in the future. You do not have to agree with me, obviously you do not, but you do not need to try and twist everyone's thoughts into your own view. Take a step back, get off your high horse, and relax a little bit. Let other people have an opinion and your welcome to have your own, just stop berating people and trying to derail their opinions because they do not mesh with your own.

But now SE knows that Lockhart doesn't play video games within a week before or after Christmas so I'm sure they'll never do it again.
The funny thing is it seems like there's always SOMEBODY who gets outraged that these FREE campaigns offered out of the goodness of SE's heart don't exactly live up to what they wanted. Last time someone here was outraged because they didn't follow the clearly spelled out instructions and lost a day or two of free time from resubbing (or something like that), and a time before that someone was outraged because they resubbed a few days before not knowing about the campaign, etc.

How does saddened = outraged? These are not out of the "goodness of their hearts", its an attempt to get players to come back. Players that I can usually talk into coming back to see new stuff. This is not as much about me as it is about the fact they cant come back this time. But now I'm repeating myself, with words your going to twist to your narrative again.

No, you're right, it was hyperbole, I won't deny that. But it was hyperbole to make a point.
I mean yes, the campaigns have a purpose, but it's still a guesture of good will to former players. It's not intended to be a primary means of play though.
Also, I thought you were speaking of yourself, not other players. You don't represent anyone other than yourself. Perhaps you don't, and that's fine, but many people have a lot of extra free time this time of year and many, such as myself, play a lot of games during this time (And this is true any year, not just this one). Doesn't mean they're ignoring family, either.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with Alhanelem. He believes in freedom of speech (even though, you all make him to look good most of time). Surely, his reactions may sound "antagonistic" due to his higher post count but the way his words sounding does not. He is responsible for mass numbers of people being banned from here over the years, this is why I warn new posters when he tries to antagonize them for no reason. This thread is a prime example in how he is going after lockhart for no reason, but there are many others. Look how the thread started and then what he turned it into. Here is the strategy, attack, attack, they respond in kind, raise shield of "you are harassing me", report, attack, attack, raise flag of innocence even though he started slinging the mud.
He has been doing this for 5-6 years.

I think we are aware that he is being infamous on the official forum. I am not the one who judges people. Forum moderators do. Odd enough if you are not aware, there is an option to add anyone to ignore list. Go to any user's profile and add to ignore list. People on the official FFXIV forum do that all the time.

For people that don't know, FFXI and FFXIV (as well as other online games they run) were all put into closer managerial control a few months ago, so they "work together" more now instead of all being isolated entities. They simply staggered the free access times of FFXI and FFXIV since they were competing with each other. However large or small the impact, the point remained the same.

He has been doing this for 5-6 years. This is a complete lie and you know it. Maybe you know people who are banned from the foruims but Square Enix banned them, not me and you can't prove that I even reported them. If someone got banned, it's because they broke the rules. How is that in any way my fault? Even if you could make the case that I'm some sort of snitch (You can't), if they didn't break forum rules, they wouldn't have given anyone anything to report them for. Further, you don't have to be reported by a user to get banned.
Your post once again amounts to baseless libel, a smear campaign. The very idea that you actually believe I intentionally bait people into breaking rules to get them banned is pure insanity and completely unfounded and false. And I haven't reported you once even though you've made claims like this multiple times. So if you get banned, you dug your own grave.
I think we are aware that he is being infamous on the official forum. I am not the one who judges people. Forum moderators do. Odd enough if you are not aware, there is an option to add anyone to ignore list. Go to any user's profile and add to ignore list. People on the official FFXIV forum do that all the time. It's really as simple as this. If you really don't like someone and you're afraid they're going to get you to do something you wouldn't normally do, then BLOCK THEM. Why would you allow yourself to be baited by someone you personally believe is a baiter? Ultimately, "he made me do it" isn't a valid excuse for doing something wrong, and the forum gives you the appropriate tools to avoid that exact kind of situation. You just have to use them. I'm probably on quite a few people's block lists, and wh ile I think that's unfortunate, I'm glad they had the foresight and common sense to not allow themselves to be subjected to something they didn't like.

The dates for this campaign were specifically chosen so as to not step on the toes of similar campaigns being offered in Square Enix's other titles. It's really that simple. But again, aside from my opinions about the behavior you state you may be taking, I really have to wonder why you're here at all if you specifically only play during come-back campaigns and don't enjoy the game enough to play any more than that. I'm not saying this to be destructive or insulting, I'm just saying you should really think about this and whether you should continue to play at all or not. If you like the game, resub for a month or two. If not, Maybe find one you'd rather invest that amount of time in.

I'm really confused about why you think I'm only coming back for the campaign. Did I say that somewhere? If I was confusing somewhere I want to clear it up. I have been subbed for, basically all of time. The friends I usually talk into coming back, at least for the free login but usually end up re-subbing for a while, cannot or will not be coming back for this specific campaign due to the dates. I can appreciate why SE put the campaign where they did because it will be good for those people who are stuck at home and are not able to see their family or friends during the pandemic. If the pandemic is less of a concern a year from now, due to vaccinations or anything else, I'm just saying this placement doesn't seem to work for people I know. Which sucks because I really enjoy that time with friends, but I'm not angry or anything at SE. I was just suggesting that it be moved back to where it was in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Early November 9/10th until 19-24th. I'm not trying to get everyone ragging about the fact I have friends that will be spending the holiday with their family's without their FFXI desktop. If your looking to team up with something on the game, I am staying home for the holidays so don't worry about me infecting you!
I hope that's cleared things up for you and others. If anyone else would like to add their opinion of the dates of the campaign and add some reasoning behind it, I appreciate the feedback and hopefully if their is enough good feedback the campaign will happen at the best times for everyone. I just don't want this thread to be a bunch of people arguing about other peoples choices in their life outside of FFXI. I also would like it not be a argument ground for something other than the dates of the campaign because I feel like that takes away from the purpose of the thread. Thanks everyone!

I'm really confused about why you think I'm only coming back for the campaign. Did I say that somewhere? To me, it was implied by complaining about the timing of the campaign. A current active player has no reason to complain about this because they're already subbed, and this campaign isn't directed at them. Also, in a post after your first post, you stated:
I look forward to returning for a few weeks every 6months or so, will not be returning for this one. which certainly sounds to me like you're only here during campaigns. But maybe that wasn't what you meant to suggest.
Also keep in mind we are free to discuss whatever aspects of the thread we'd like, and the original poster, be it you, me, or anyone else, doesn't get to write the rules for any given thread. If I start a thread and someone wants to go on a tangent, that's their prerogative. As someone on the autism spectrum with a resultingly blunt personality, I'm just trying to be clear that while it may annoy me if someone digresses from the very specific things I wanted to discuss in making a thread, I can't tell them not to, because I'm not the one in charge.
Aside from all that:
I'm sorry their campaign timing didn't align with your desires, and it's very likely the FFXI team is too. As was noted, they had to move the campaign to avoid it conflicting with campaigns in other games they service. I wouldn't assume that this is a permanent fixed schedule and that tehy plan to do it exactly this way next year. In fact, they probably wont. But in my original point, I was simply saying that a campaign during the holidays likely benefits a lot of people, just as it inconveniences others. That was the case for you this time. Perhaps next time they'll be able to hold it when you' ll be able to take better advantage of it.

Are you purposely cutting things out and Ignoring what I said? I said PEOPLE "I look forward to returning for a few weeks every 6months or so, will not be returning for this one." Also, common man, I've said it a dozen times now, the reason I was "complaining" is because I am hoping they wont switch the November campaign to Christmas and New Years again next year.

I'm not purposely doing anything. I simply quoted and explained what led me to my conclusion.
And as I said, the campaign shuffling was to prevent scheduling conflicts across their products. I don't find it likely that this is a permanent arrangement. They aren't locked into the same time frames year after year. Just because they held XYZ campaign in March one year doesn't mean it has to be March the next time. it could be April, or any other time.

First, here is a link to the forum rules https://support.na.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=20&la=1&tag=forum I'm specifically citing "the following actions are not allowed while participating in the forums :Posting content that does not follow the theme of the category or thread."
Also, I appreciate your sympathy. I'm just trying to make sure they get feedback, regardless of if people feel the same way as me or not.

You falsely quoted, cutting out the beginning of the sentence. If you didn't purposefully do that, I suggest going back to see.

My comments have been relevant to the thread. Not aligning with the exact minutiae of what you expected (which I can not know) is not a violation of the rules.

I did not falsely quote anything. Every word I quoted came from your post. The section I quoted was the part that led me to my conclusion, and that's all there is to it. I'm sorry you feel there is some other motive to this, I assure you there is not.
It is possible I may have misunderstood your meaning with the statement you made, and for that I am sorry. But again, there was nothing false about the quotation nor was there any intent to mislead. I took the comment to mean that you personally would not be returning when you were apparently speaking of a friend or friends. Clearly, I didn't read it correctly so for that I apologize.

You know, I'm getting really sick and tired of the libel. I don't start fights. I reply honestly and earnestly to threads and other people, in fact, certain people in particular, react or fan flames etc. I don't come here to pick a fight. Just becuase it happens sometimes, that doesn't mean it's the reason I'm here. This thread has almost been more about beating up on me than it has been about the topic.
Sometimes I misunderstand things and go off running with something not realizing I was originally mistaken. But I'm not here for fights and I don't really enjoy it. I just happen to have unpopular opinions a lot of the time.
It extends into everything. I loved Dominion in league of legends. It wasnt popular and got deleted. I loved Twisted Treeline. It wasn't popular, but held on for a long time and eventually got deleted. I loved Team Free-for-all in Warcraft 3. It got deleted. Seems I just never seem to like the popular things lol

What libel? Sounds more like you have an arm lenght of history with the locals. Not taking any side but got to let go of some and take others. Not like it matters anyways when there's like 5 people using the forums of FFXI. You're far too personal. It's kind of awkward to see such emotional replies.

Libel, n. defamation by written or printed words, pictures, or in any form other than by spoken words or gestures.
Libel contrasts with slander, which is making oral statements about a person or thing which they know to be or are provably false.
Most of what they post about me is false, Pixela is under some delusion that I personally got various people banned from this forum, which is absurd, because I don't have the power to do so. Anyone who does get banned from the forums made the decision to break a forum rule and get caught doing it. That's their fault no matter what their reason is for posting it. Not thinking before posting is what leads to all the bad things that can occur on a forum, including my own failure to correctly understand the OP's meaning in this thread.
Others on this forum just think I'm here with some kind of malicious intent purely because I disagree with people a lot. If we all agreed on everything, there honestly would be little need for a forum in the first place. What is there to discuss when everyone already feels the same way about any given subject? They created the "history," not me. I'm sorry that I don't often agree with the people in question, but that doesn't make me malicious or a troll or someone trying to start fights or get anyone banned. It's just not true, period.
It's kind of awkward to see such emotional replies. They're the one's making this personal by specifically naming me in threads and associating me with false claims. I'd like nothing more than to get along with everyone, but it seems they've made up their minds. It's pretty frustrating trying to discuss anything when two of those "5" other people seem to be out to smear you.

You really think others are idiots, don't you? My statement was more then fine. It's not my fault, or anyone else if you keep writing to people left and right with all the stereotypes of the angry Galka. Just let Pixela keep being a Karen, no one really cares about him/her.

Why do you think I think people are idiots? A question was asked and I answered it. While I find certain people to be terribly unkind, I don't think anyone is an idiot and I'm not nor have I been trying to make anyone feel that way.
