Through out my time on FFXI i've noticed that not a single person i've met dislikes Blue Mage or being Blue Mage.

People regard Blue Mage highly, consider them very cool and in fact a lot of people find Blue Mages to be their favorite job.

I'm beginning to think Blue Mages are the most highly regarded/popular class among the players.

Only if by "Players" you mean "Draylo".

BLU has a cult following, but that doesn't make it popular and it certainly does not make it highly regarded. You're just less likely to find a situation wherein non-BLU players would talk about how bad BLU is; especially compared to how often you'll find BLU-Main players pointing out how good BLU is whenever humanly possible.

Hey now, we don't all go fanatical about it. XD I <3 my BLU, but it has its downs like every other job. Namely hunting spells - I would know, I collected them all from 1-90. x_x

Also I still see lots of lolBLU, so I don't know where you're coming from. XD

The job's pretty solid, but also easy to mess up. I'd say it's one of SE's few successful forays into creating a hybrid class, but this isn't to say it's flawless.

True enough =P. I'm just used to being flooded with it, since a good friend of mine is a very fanatical Almace BLU. BLU isn't a bad job, and it's not like everyone hates it, but I couldn't really call it anything close to the "Most popular" or "Most highly regarded".

I see tons of lolBLU too when BLU is brought up, I just meant that I don't see BLU in general brought up at all by most non-BLU players. Aside from Grellows, it's just a lot more rare to hear BLU mentioned at all by non-BLUs, whereas for the BLUs I know it's "Can I come BLU yet?" every time we do something.

Pre abyssea people did not want blus in their merit parties or end game events like salvage due to their reliance on MP to do damage. Only reason people want them now in abyssea is for procs pretty much.

Pre Abyssea Blu also had all of one refresh slot in gear, had fewer set points so setting auto refresh was larger portion of their points, and had no refresh spell. Blu now doesn't have these problems (Although the set cost is still somewhat prohibitive when it comes to setting some spells).

I've gotta say that I love playing BLU, I find it an incredibly fun job. I'm very glad that I leveled it, though I'm not quite satisfied with my gear yet (it's my most recent job).

That said, I don't ask to go BLU, because despite that I REALLY enjoy it, I'm aware of its flaws. A decent amount of them go away in Abyssea (and the fact that BLU has unique procs doesn't hurt), but even in Abyssea there's still problems. I love going as BLU when it's called for, but it isn't that often (never outside Abyssea, really, but then again there's little to do outside Abyssea anyway at the moment). And I don't go touting how it's super whomagawd awesome, at worst I talk about how fun it is (but I also do that with SCH).

It may not be useless like it was before abyssea, but it is far from the most popular job.

Monk, Thief, Ninja, Warrior, White Mage, Black Mage.
I'd say those jobs are by far more popular currently than blue mage.
It's not even in the top 30% regarding popularity.
Sure, those that play it, talk it up a bunch but, so did I, on my Corsair pre-abyssea (I'll still maintain Corsair is amazingly pivotal in terms of what i can do, but I won't get into that right now).

BLUs never could keep up with the exp group TP burn thing but they make up for it with solo to an extent. In some cases BLUs fell back on back up healing which actually worked out better than you would expect. BLU strong point is what they bring to the table for NM encounters. It's always been their strong point and easily makes up for any short comings. It didn't help them level up in the past regrettably but that's the player base for you. It's a pretty interesting job but it's not easy to do right. Popular jobs tend to be "mindless" so to speak.

I've always been impressed with what BLU can do and makes me wish I had more space and time to play the job beyond level 32. But for now I'm stuck until my space issues are solved, hopefully with this incoming update in May.

In befor... never mind. He already unleashed his trap and someone is so biting.

You'd be surprised at how versatile BLU could be back in the days, even in regular EXP pts. A good BLU against Colibri knew how to balance his spellcasting use. Red Lotus Blade -> CA'd Death Scissors or Mandibular Bite = Gravitation, then you'd Burst Affinity an MP Drainkiss and get anywhere from 80-120 MP back while doing a fair bit of damage. Granted, it wasn't as good as the SAMs, RNGs, DRGs, and WARs who could rape things in that time, but it had its place if the BLU knew what they were doing.

The problem? Most BLUs sucked. They didn't know how to manage their MP and thought spamming every spell then resting for two fights was the way to go. That was the reason we were often referred to as lolBLUs and didn't get invites; most of them didn't have a clue how to manage and conserve their MP.

That being said, that tactic worked wonders on pet killing camps. I remember tigers in Vunkerl, I'd get some nice Exp/kill. Raptors outside of Mamool Ja Staging Point were nice on BLU/WHM (for Viruna) too.
