Do I need to start a quest to enable ruby drop?

Okay so I've killed maybe 200 leaches, but no ruby. Am I missing something? Do I need to speak with someone before the drop will be enabled?

The Ruby just has a really bad drop rate across the board. It's not you.

You actually need to get the ruby BEFORE you can unlock the quest to unlock the job. As already said, grab a THF before you start farming. Normally takes me ~5-10min of beach clearing in Buburimu to get one, using TH8+. Without THF/TH, you are looking at painfully low odds.
