Delete any .dat file (do not delete any folders, and I suggest you find one w/ a small filesize like /rom/0/15.dat to minimize download time) then run check files to repair the install. This'll take a while, since it checks every single file, but it should fix your problem.

You may wish to include a disclaimer with that before peeps go and destroy their FFXI installation :)

Disclaimer: Unauthorized deletion of files may corrupt your gameplay experience of Final Fantasy XI Online or PlayOnline services. While Square- Enix and the FFXI Development Team tries to fix issues like this by making the appropriate patch/update to correct the issues, some issues may not be resolved or overlooked.
The Final Fantasy XI Development Team encourage players to contact them through the forum for any errors in-game. When you try to take matters into your own hands, Square-Enix and The Final Fantasy Development Team are not responsible for your actions.
Please be advised to use caution if you do take any matters to consideration or in your own hands due to other players advise. (In this case deleting a *.dat file to force the file checker to reinstall or redownload the latest version update)
A clean install can also correct issues should issues continue to arise. However please be also advised to only use this measure if you are unable to resolve any technical issues with your copy of Final Fantasy XI Online/PlayOnline as you will have to download any patch update that was added past Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection: Seekers Edition or all installed versions leading to Final Fantasy XI Online: Seekers of Adoulin expansion pack.

This method works to fix file errors, has always been around, and can't destroy the entire install. The primary disclaimers needed are that it's not recommended by the devs, and that it is not fast.
