Ooh... I like the idea, but I'm not really sure it's necessary. As long as your short-term memory isn't crap, you should be able to treat "Esc" like the "quick glance up to make sure I'm not running into anything". On my screen, the map is just transparent enough that I can still see my character and things not too far off, if I focus.
