Steps:
Went to get the KI from the Velkk encampment at (K-10), received Key item: "Large strip of Velkk hide".
Went back to Toppled Tree who accepted the hide and told me to meet him at a vine SW of his position (M-7), lost key item: "Large strip of Velkk hide".
Neither Scalable Area at (K-6) or (K-7) will trigger a cutscene, even though Toppled Tree's dialogue is flagged as Key Item complete.
