The way the game is now, comparing the price you buy items from NPC's to the price you sell the same item, there is a clear disadvantage. Raising your quest fame for the area the NPC is in helps this, but new gil has to enter the economy from somewhere! There is very little gil being produced via quests/missions any more, gil via killing monsters is low, so if those are not improved or raised, the only other way to raise gil levels is selling items to NPC's, and this is where the discrepancy between the NPC's ability to claim high prices vs the players ability to sell for greatly lowered prices rears its ugly head.

New gil needs to be added into the system to balance out gil taken out of the system via chocobo, AH fee's, and buying items from NPCs, more gil is also needed to encourage people towards any goals they may have the require gil, and the best way to do that is improving the gil awarded from selling to NPCs.

So I propose a new craft skill: barter. Each time you sell an item to a NPC, or buy an item from an NPC, you have a chance for a skill up. Maybe a quest is needed to unlock it, and like synergy it does not have guild ranking tests every 10 levels. It would have a level of 0-100, and each level of barter increases the gil you can sell items for, as well as lower the gil you can purchase items for.

I realize craft is not really a good category for this, but it fits better in craft than combat or magic.
