No, it's not supposed to do that. I would suggest running a file check from POL.

I have had errors logging in too. First I get a box "Please wait while Windows configures FFXI". I I hit cancel, I'm disconnected, if I leave it to run it then looks for a CD-ROM. I have not had this happen in the past, does anyone have any ideas on it, please? File check threw up nothing. Thank you.

How can anyone help with that [lack of info]?
You need to follow SE's template...

Check to see if your antivirus program removed the ffxi.dll file. It happened to me today and everything worked fine after I restored it.

Thank you so much. That was the problem.
And I'm very sorry I didn't use a template, but I don't know what it is or where I would find it. When I looked up how to reply to posts on the SE FAQ page all it gave me was this:
- Responding to an existing thread
Click "Reply to Thread" located on the top left of the page while displaying a thread you wish to make a post, and you will be moved to "Quick Reply" at the bottom of the thread. Enter a message in the box and then click "Post Quick Reply" to finish posting to the thread. You will be required to enter at least 10 characters in a message body and will be allowed to enter up to 10,000 characters in a post. You may also use BB codes and Smilies in the body.
If you click "Go Advanced" located on the bottom right in the "Quick Reply" box, a page where you can enter a title and additional options will be displayed. You can reply to a thread through the page.
Thank you very much for your help again, Gannon.

Hi,
I wasn't having a go or anything, it's just that it gives the tech teams very little to go on. They should really have a part of that template that mentions what kind of anti-virus people are using to, as they can mess up a lot of stuff!
The other thing is that posts without any tech info will generally be overlooked or removed by SE in my experience.
